Over this semester and through the readings the concepts of deviance, prestige, material culture, cultural imperialism, and race have interested me because of the relevance I see of these sociological concepts in my daily life and as I travel. Each of these concepts has helped me to see society and the world in a new sense and I will share how as I go through each concept.

In the textbook, deviance is defined as a behavior, trait, belief, or other characteristic that violates a norm and causes a negative reaction. Deviance is created by characteristics that violate norms and cause group reactions. Forms of less consequential deviance can be seen daily such as someone smoking or littering in a park, while more consequential deviance is rarer to seen such as illegal drug use or someone being assaulted. This picture of my brother on our roof can be viewed as a behavior that some would assume is deviant. My brother being on the roof may make others think that he is going against the norms and rules of society even if it is legal. For example, many people would view his behavior as deviant if he were on the roof of a neighbor's house without permission because that goes against many norms and is considered illegal. This picture illustrates to me that my actions can have an impact depending on the views of deviance in others.

This image shows the concept of prestige. Prestige is defined as the social honor people are given because of their membership in well-regarded social groups. Throughout social classes prestige is more abundant in higher social classes than in lower. Prestige can create inequality between different social classes and groups through accessibility, participation, and granting. Depending on your social class you may or may not be allowed to do or participate in certain events and activities that some may seem should be open to the public. This picture of the Monte-Carlo Casino illustrates the concept of prestige. You may only be allowed to enter the casino depending on your outfit, mannerisms, and appearance, and the bouncers see you fit to enter depending on your social class and group. This picture shows that in my life many places and opportunities are available depending on my perceived social class and group in society.

Material culture can be viewed in this image. Material culture is defined as the objects associated with a cultural group, such as tools, machines, utensils, buildings, and artwork; any physical object to which we give social meaning. One of the main ways the concept of material culture can be seen is through the clothes people wear. Our perspective and idea of someone belonging to a certain culture can be affected by the clothes and accessories they wear. This photo indicates that my sister and cousin belong to the Disney culture due to their sweaters and hats. People who would view them would realize that they identify as part of the Disney culture because of their clothing. This picture indicates to me that my clothing can impact the ways people view me according to what culture I belong to. I should be careful with what clothes I decide to where if I do or do not desire to be seen as affiliated with a certain culture.
