Henry David Thereau background:
Henry David Thoreau was an American naturalist, essayist, poet, and philosopher.
A leading transcendentalist, he is best known for his book Walden. a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay "Civil Disobedience". He practiced civil disobedience in his own life including his refusal to pay taxes in protest of slavery and the Mexican War resulting in a night in the Concord jail in July of 1846.
