Hi! I'm Eme. I am 11-years-old and in 5th grade. For my Social Studies project, I am writing a letter to Susan B. Anthony. Because of the hard work she did in the 1800's, women like my mom have the right to vote today.

Here is what I have learned about Susan B. Anthony.
She came from a family who fought in the American Revolution.
She believed everyone was equal under God and this inspired her to seek change. She dedicated her life to women's rights.

Susan B. Anthony was a bit of a rebel. She gave speeches demanding women be given the right to vote even though it was improper for women to do so at the time. She and her friend Elizabeth Cady Stanton were editors of the newspaper The Revolution. They spread ideas of equality and rights for women. In 1872 Anthony was arrested for voting. She died in 1906 before she could see the results of her efforts.
Dear Ms. Susan B. Anthony,
Thank you for all you did to pave the way for girls
like me. I want to write for a newspaper and speak about important issues like you did some day.
In a few years I will vote thanks to all of your efforts. A lot of things have changed since you fought for women's rights for the better.

You once said, "The day may be approaching when the whole world will recognize woman as the equal as a man."
In 1920, the 19th Amendment was created giving women the right to vote.
While women were mainly teachers during your time in history, and in your case a writer and speaker, now many women hold the same jobs men do.
Women are doctors, lawyers, and leaders of our great country.

There is a popular sport called football and for the first time in history, there is a female referee. (That's the person who enforces the rules)
There are famous female athletes like Simone Biles and basketball player Kaitlin Clark.

You once said, "There will never be complete equality until women themselves help make the laws and elect lawmakers."
Now we do!
Women serve on the highest court in America.
Four of the nine seats on the Supreme Court are held by women.
Women like Governor Kristi Noem of South Dakota lead our country's states.
In the last election our nation elected the first female Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris.

You can see Ms. Anthony, how far women have come. But we have yet to see how far we will go. Someday we will have a woman serve as President of the United States. Thank you for blazing a trail for us!
With much Appreciation,
Eme Howe

I think Susan B. Anthony would be amazed at the accomplishments women have made since then. Her life is an example of what you can do when you are driven by faith and a strong conviction.
