Hi, I'm Rachel Robinson, Jackie Robinson's wife. I'm here today to tell youall about my husband Jackie Robison. Jackie was the first African American
major league baseball player. He began playing in 1947, for the Brooklyn
Dodgers. Jackie played first base, second base, shortstop, and infield. He was amazing!
I met Jackie in college and we fell in love and got married in 1946. I remember it all so clearly. Before our marriage, Jackie was recruited by
Branch Rickey. Rickey was a good man and later in life he became a
spokes activist for civil rights.

The first time Branch ever saw Jackie play baseball was in 1944. He
was playing with an African American club team. The second that
Branch stepped out of his car Jackie hit a home run. At that very
moment Branch knew he had to have Jackie on the Brooklyn Dodgers
baseball team.

Jackie was amazing. There is no questioning that my husband was one
of the best baseball players ever play. In his fist year, Jackie hit
twelve home runs, had the most stolen bases, and was selected as
rookie of the year.
It was such an honor!

When Jackie first started playing different groups of people would
harass him for being an African American. Jackie never let it get
to him and always just played harder. The manager of the
Dodgers Leo always stood up for Jackie saying "I will not stand
for racism on any team of mine!"

The manager of the Dodgers, Leo Durocher always stood up
for Jackie saying "I will not stand for racism on any team of
mine!" He threatened to trade players who were mean to
Jackie. Leo's loyalty to Jackie set the tone for the Dodgers year
after year.

In 1949 Jackie was selected as the National League's most
valuable player! I had never been more proud of my husband!
They even wrote a song about him called "Did You See Jackie
Robinson Hit That Ball?"

After eight years of hard work Jackie achieved his ultimate goal.
In 1955, the Brooklyn Dodgers won the world series. My husband
had never been happier! It was such a wonderful win!
