What Is Hashtag
The hashtag is used to categorize content, making it searchable and part of broader conversations. It facilitates trend tracking, brand promotion, event organization, and social movements on platforms like Twitter and Instagram (CopyPress, 2023).
.
As a 24-year-old woman, witnessing the #MeToo movement unfold in Taiwan in 2023 was both eye-opening and empowering. Seeing so many brave individuals share their stories using the #MeToo hashtag across various sectors like politics, entertainment, and academia was deeply moving. It highlighted pervasive issues of sexual harassment that society often overlooks.
The widespread adoption of #MeToo in Taiwan not only exposed the extent of these issues but also sparked crucial conversations about gender equality and rights. However, it also underscored the systemic challenges victims face, such as cultural biases and outdated legal structures that hinder justice.
Despite these hurdles, the #MeToo movement represents a beacon of hope. It shows the power of collective action in pushing for societal change and creating a future where everyone can feel safer and more empowered.
My story
The impact of hashtag on social movements
Using hashtags to bring attention to an issue and gather supporters under the same hashtag can help organize protests, petitions, and other actions. Hashtags like #BlackLivesMatter have attracted wide attention, pushing many governments and institutions to look again and change police policies and racial equality.(Hu, 2020) Also, it is very important for victims to be brave enough to speak out about their bad treatment. I support everyone’s fight to live bravely. such as,#YesAllWomen is a collective trigger for women While a lot of harm can be done online, it has been transformative for women and feminists (Grinberg, 2014).
Positive
Negative
Hashtags have both positive and negative effects. Complex social issues may lose their depth of meaning due to trends. Anderson & Anderson's Research shows that political participation on social media can have a significant negative impact and distract the public.(2024) Moreover, hashtags can mislead people into thinking they are taking meaningful actions, when in reality, there are often no substantial results or ongoing efforts. A survey found that 77% of people believe social media gives them a sense of making a substantial contribution, though this may not be the case (Anderson & Anderson, 2024). Therefore, hashtags should not be used casually, as misuse can have the opposite effect.
