Introduction
Bulldogs are great companions and are great with children. Bulldogs are my favorite dog breed. They are sweet, friendly, and courageous. They are very loyal companions who love attention from anyone. Bulldogs are super sweet and kid-friendly. In this book, you will be reading about bulldogs' health, exercise, how to groom them, what they eat, and so on. I have chosen to write this book about bulldogs because my family and I own one bulldogs. My dog is an English bulldog and is the sweetest thing in the world. He is very fond of me and loves being a goofball. He makes me laugh more than anything and LOVES water!
I have put in a lot of research for this book! I hope you enjoy it!!!
About The Breed
Bulldogs are one of the most expensive dog breeds in the U.S.. Most American bulldogs are mistaken for Pit bulls (or the other way around). It's pretty easy to tell an American bulldog from an English one. English bulldogs have a very wrinkly face and body and can weigh 50 pounds or more, while American bulldogs have less wrinkles, are taller, and can weigh up to 125 pounds when fully grown. They also have a non cropped tail. Bulldogs originated around 1631-1632. The Old English Bulldog was used in the late 1600s for bullbaiting, which will be talked about more in Chapter 9. Some of the most common diseases for bulldogs are cancer and Hip Dysplasia. These diseases are caused by genetics, viruses, old age, and their diet.
Health
Bulldogs can have many health problems if not properly taken care of. Some bulldogs can have cancer or hip problems. English bulldogs must have their faces wiped every day or yeast can start forming in the creases/wrinkles of their faces. If bulldogs are taken care of well, they will live eight to ten years. Bulldogs should not be in the sun for long periods of time, or they can overheat. You should make sure that they always have plenty of fresh water available.
Exercise
Exercise is needed for every type of dog - large and small, short and tall - ALL OF 'EM!!! When exercising a bulldog, you must make sure the dog has plenty of water and does not spend a lot of its time outside on a hot sunny day. Most dogs prefer being inside on hot days like these! So just make sure you have a big ol' fan in your house or backyard!
Grooming
Bulldogs should be groomed every other week or so to ensure that they stay cool when it is warmer outside. You should make sure that the area under your bulldog's tail is kept clean, as well as behind and inside the ears. Make sure your dog's nails are trimmed every 2 weeks or so to keep them from growing too long.
Training
Training a bulldog isn't too hard, unless you are impatient. Bulldogs are very easy and love pleasing their owners when they are being trained.
Like most dog breeds, you should start training your bulldog young to ensure that they are nice and easy-going as they get older. You should also make sure that your bulldog knows the "drop it" command. If your dog does not know this command, then you must make sure you are careful when taking something out of their mouth. Bulldogs have very strong grips.
