Introduction
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. He was known for his help guiding the Union in the Civil War and passing the Emancipation Proclamation. He is a very important person, you may even see him on the penny and the $5 bill!

Lincoln volunteered and fought in the Black Hawk War of 1832, a conflict between the Sauks and Foxes and the Illinois militia.

The Confederate States of America was created after Lincoln was elected president. Lincoln was against slavery and for the Southern states, slavery was a part of life.

In 1818, Lincoln's mother died from milk sickness. Milk sickness is caused by drinking milk from cows that have eaten a poisonous plant.

is for Emancipation Proclamation

Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st, 1863. This document declared that the enslaved people in the Southern states were free.

is for Fort Sumter

About a month after becoming President, Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter, leaving President Lincoln to deal with a big issue as a new president.

is for Gettysburg Address

In 1863, President Lincoln traveled to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to remember the Gettysburg cemetery, one of the severe battles of the Civil War. He gave a speech to remember those who had fallen during the battle.

Abraham Lincoln won the election to the House of Representatives and served one two-year term in 1846.

Before becoming President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln was a Whig supporter and served four terms in the Illinois Legislature.

President Abraham Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865, by John Wilkes Booth at a theater. He was the first president of the United States to be assassinated.

Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky where there is now a National Park in remembrance of President Lincoln.

President Lincoln was born inside a log cabin now being preserved at a National Park in Kentucky.

is for Mary Todd Lincoln

Mary Todd Lincoln was President Lincoln's wife who served as the First Lady of the United States from 1861 until 1865.

is for New Salem, Illinois

Abraham Lincoln lived in New Salem, Illinois for many years during his twenties. While living there he was a boatman, soldier, store owner, postmaster, surveyor, and rail slitter. He had many jobs!

is for Opportunity

President enforced the Emancipation Proclamation, granting former slaves the opportunity to be free from slavery.

is for Pioneer Farmers

Abraham Lincoln's father, Thomas Lincoln, worked as a pioneer farmer and carpenter.
