Once Upon a time in Chinatown, there lived a
girl named Mulan. Her parents had come to
America from China, where they worked in a
sweatshop until they could get green cards,
but Mulan and her brother Mushu had been
born in America.
They both had big dreams. Mushu would be a
basketball player, and Mulan would be a world
class ballerina. Her parents worked extra shifts
to pay for her lessons, while her brother
learned to play basketball in the street.

Mulan was very unhappy in dance class
because she was so clumsy. Even her kitten,
Mao mi, was a better dancer. She also did
poorly in gymnastics and cheer leading.
She used to wonder, "what am I going to do?
I'll never be a real American girl!"

Meanwhile, Mulan's brother was playing street
basketball and getting very good, until he fell
in with the wrong crowd. He met a older boy
named Gangshu, who told him that basketball
is for babies. If he wanted to be a real man, he
would help the gang make money and keep
undesirables out of the the neighborhood. For
his initiation, he would go to the gang's secret
meeting place that night.
Mushu did not want to join the gang, but he
was scared...

Mushu came home and told Mulan what was
happening. Mulan knew that the gang would
not stop until someone from her building
agreed to join. She could not let it be her
brother, and her parent were too busy working
to help, so she decided to go to the meeting
place herself in Mushu's place.

Of course, the gang did not accept girls, so she
dressed as a boy. She pretended to be Mushu's
older brother, who had just immigrated from
China. She brought a camera to take pictures,
so that she could tell the police where the
meeting place was and what the gang did
there. Hopefully, that would get rid of them for
good.
This was a big risk, but Mulan was very brave
and willing to protect her brother at all costs.

The plan worked better than expected. Gangshu took her
not only to the secret meeting place, but the head of the
gang was there. Everyone knew the gang was headed by
muscular teenager in a red hat with brass knuckles, but no
one had ever seen his face. All over the block he was
simply known as "The hand." She knew if she took his
picture, the police would have the evidence they needed to
put the gang away for good. So she pressed record on her
cell phone camera, soon she had all the evidence she
needed.
However, the gang told her she must begin her iniation
before she could go anywhere.
