There are hundreds of thousands of bird species in the world. You
may be familiar with some of them yourself.
The birds in this picture are crows. They are highly intelligent birds
who communicate with each other through clicks and caws.
Crows are very social. They search for food in groups and
participate in an activity called roosting in the fall and winter
months. This is when a large number of crows gathers in a fairly
isolated area to forage for food and huddle up for warmth.

Toucans are very bizarre looking
birds that reside neotropic areas
along the Earth's equator. A
Toucan's beak is actually very
light weight as it is made up of a
spongy bone fiber. These birds
vary in size, their bright colors
DO NOT differentiate gender
(like most birds), and they
primarily eat fruit. Toucans have
been known to eat insects on
occasion, but they certainly
prefer the sweet tropical fruits
that grow in the rain forests in
which these birds live.

Ahhhh, the Macaw! This beautiful bird, like the toucan, can be found in
tropical climates and in rain forests. Like the crow, Macaws are
incredibly social and highly intelligent animals that not only have the
ability to communicate with each other, but have been known to
communicate with human beings as well.
For this reason, many people enjoy keeping these birds as
domesticated pets. These birds can be trained to speak, and some
have been known to have a human vocabulary of 400+ words.
The Macaw diet is similar to that of a Toucan, however, these birds eat
many seasonal fruits, and so have to migrate in search of food.
Macaws, as well as other parrot species, often take part in eating the
clay from a clay lick, which is the steep clay sides of a low river. The
clay is high in sodium, which the birds seem to like for taste. Some
scientists believe that the clay is eaten to balance out toxic substances
that may be consumed in the wild, and also to promote calcium for
egg development.

This little guy is the Ruby Throated Hummingbird, and is just one of
over 300 species. Hummingbirds have the fastest wings in the world.
The giant hummingbird flaps its wings a 8-10 times per second, a
medium sized humming bird can flap at about 20-25 beats per second,
and the smallest hummingbird of all, the Bee Hummingbird, can beat
its wings at 80-100 per second.
Hummingbirds eat nectar, which is what butterflies and many insects
eat. You may have a hummingbird feeder at your house: these are
typically bright red containers filled with sugar water. These feeders
are bright red in color because hummingbirds are attracted to the
bright colors of flowers, so this color is meant to attract the birds in
the same kind of way.
Hummingbirds are the smallest species of bird you can possibly find,
and the ONLY species of bird that can fly backwards. They are found to
exist in the Americas, from southern Alaska all the way down to Chile.

The Peafowl (or peacock, which
refers to the male of the species)
is an extravagantly beautiful bird
that is native to India and
surrounding countries. The fancy
feathers are only found in the
male birds and are intended for
mating purposes. Typically the tail
trails behind them in a train, but
when it is time to show off for a
female, they fan out these colorful
quills and shake them rapidly. The
Peafowl is the national bird of
India, and represents
benevolence, kindness,
compassion, and good luck.
