At Green Meadow Elementary, there was a boy named Max who had a big secret. He wasn't the fastest runner or the strongest kid, but he had something even more amazing...... a secret power that could calm even the biggest, wildest feelings.
It all started one morning during recess. Max was sitting outside, enjoying the sunshine, when he saw his friend Ava standing near the jungle gym, looking really upset. Her face was scrunched up, and she was holding her fists tightly by her sides.
Max walked over to her. "Hey, Ava, what's going on?" he asked.
Ava's eyes welled up with tears. "It's not fair! I was first in line for the slide, and now Emily cut in front of me! I’m so mad!" she yelled, stamping her foot.

Max could feel the storm of frustration building in the air. Max remembered something his mom had told him: "When big feelings are in the air, you have the power to help calm them down."
Max didn’t know exactly how his powers worked, but he had noticed that when he stayed calm, other kids seemed to calm down too. So he decided to try something.

"Hey, Ava," Max said gently, "let’s take a few deep breaths together, okay? I bet it will help."
Ava glared at him. "Breathing won’t help! I’m just so mad!"
Max smiled. "I know it feels really big right now, but deep breaths are like a reset button for your brain. Wanna try? We can do it together."
Ava hesitated for a second, then shrugged. "Fine. I’ll try."
Max and Ava stood there, and Max led the way. "Breathe in through your nose... and out through your mouth. Nice and slow," he said.
Ava followed along, though she was still grumpy. They took three big breaths together.
After the third breath, Max looked at Ava. "How do you feel now?"
Ava blinked, looking surprised. "Actually, I don’t feel as mad anymore. It’s like... the storm in my head is getting smaller."
Max nodded. "That’s because deep breaths help your brain calm down. When your feelings are really big, like a huge wave, breathing helps you ride the wave without crashing."
Ava smiled, a little embarrassed. "I guess I got carried away. I’ll talk to Emily and ask her if she’ll let me go first next time."
Max beamed. "Great idea, Ava! You’re in control of your feelings. You just needed a moment to find your calm."
From that day on, Max became the quiet hero of Green Meadow Elementary. Whenever he saw his friends struggling with big feelings—whether they were angry, sad, or frustrated—he knew exactly what to do.
One day, during lunch, Max saw his friend Liam slamming his tray on the table. "This is the worst lunch ever!" Liam shouted. "I hate this pizza!"
Max walked over, calm as ever. "Hey, Liam. You look really upset. Want to try something that might help?"
Liam scowled but nodded. "I guess."
