An earthquake is a sudden movement of the earth due to the fall of rocks that are located at great depth.

Scientists call waves that travel through the Earth seismic waves. These waves are actually waves of energy that result from earthquakes, explosions, or volcanoes. These waves are felt in the Earth's crust. The Earth's crust is the outer layer of our planet and it is very thin.

Primary waves: are able to travel through solid rocks as well as liquids, for example oceans or volcanic magma.

Secondary waves: They travel slower than P waves, so they arrive later at the surface waves.

What tools do scientists use to detect an earthquake?

They use seismographs, a system that detects, amplifies and records earthquakes, as well as other movements and vibrations of the earth.
