Protecting water and raising awareness about water conservation is crucial, especially in coastal areas like Mangalia, a city located on the Romanian Black Sea coast. Water resources in such regions can be limited or threatened by various factors, such as climate change, pollution, and over-extraction.

Protecting water and raising awareness about conservation is a community effort that requires collaboration between residents, authorities, schools, businesses, and tourists. For Mangalia, being a coastal city, these efforts are even more critical, as the health of local water resources impacts both the environment and the economy. By embracing sustainable practices and educating the population, Mangalia can contribute to a healthier, more water-conscious future.
Community Participation and Government Collaboration
- Involve Local Authorities: Work with local government bodies to implement water conservation policies, such as regulating the use of water during dry seasons and ensuring proper infrastructure to reduce water loss.
- Community Engagement: Organize community events like water conservation days, where people can come together to share ideas, participate in educational activities, and take collective action to protect water resources.
- Monitor Water Quality: Regularly monitor and report on the quality of water sources near Mangalia, ensuring that any contamination or depletion is addressed quickly.
- Raise Awareness about Climate Change: Discuss how climate change can affect water availability and quality in Mangalia and other coastal regions. Highlight the importance of collective action to mitigate climate impacts.
- Promote Renewable Energy: Encourage the use of solar and wind energy, which can reduce the strain on local water resources, as traditional power plants require large amounts of water for cooling.

The Argeș is a river in Southern Romania, a left tributary of the Danube. It is 350 km (220 mi) long, and its basin area is 12,550 km (4,850 sq mi). Its source is in the Făgăraș Mountains, in the Southern Carpathians and it flows into the Danube at Oltenița. Its average discharge at the mouth is 71 m/s (2,500 cu ft/s).
The main city on the Argeș is Pitești. Upstream, it is retained by the Vidraru Dam, which has created Lake Vidraru. Its upper course, upstream of Lake Vidraru, is also called Capra.
The following localities are situated along the river Argeș, from source to mouth: Căpățânenii Ungureni, Căpățânenii Pământeni, Arefu, Poienarii de Argeș, Corbeni, Rotunda, Albeştiide Argeş,Curtea de Argeș, Băiculești, Merișani, Bascov, Pitești, Găești, Bolintin-Deal, Adunații-Copăceni, and Oltenița.
Water quality has emerged as one of the main concerns around the world recently, as it plays a significant role in promoting socio-economic development as well as maintaining viable ecosystems. The impact of water quality degradation has serious consequences, including eutrophication, sedimentation, harmful algae proliferation, and hypoxia, which has a negative impact on human settlements and ecosystems in terms of health and economy.
The Argeș River from Romania encounters significant pressures from anthropogenic factors as well as other rivers that pass highly inhabited areas with moderate efficiency of wastewater treatment. In addition to the potentially significant pressures already presented above, other types of activities/pressures may affect the condition of water bodies such as accidental pollution, fishing, and aquaculture activities, ballast and sand extraction from minor riverbeds, forest exploitation, unidentified pressures, etc.
The following recommendations are suggested to maintain or improve future water quality at the hydrological basin level:
- stopping the discharge of untreated wastewater directly into water bodies and the implementation of modern wastewater treatment facilities for the proper treatment of wastewaters before discharging. Therefore, strict environmental regulations are required to manage these negative aspects;
- the use of state-of-the-art technologies of water management, and monitoring to identify the causes and sources of pollution, as well as improvement of policy strategies;
- capacity building and environmental ethics through communication, environmental education, training, and awareness that will improve waste management and water use;
- cooperating with local stakeholders of water use, such as farmers, local institutions and non-governmental organizations, to facilitate the acceptance of new technologies and environmental policies in the context of climate change.

Water, which is our most important source of nutrients to sustain our lives, is a fundamental element in the functioning of the circulatory and digestive systems, and also plays an important role in removing waste and toxic substances from our body. Water is life. A significant part of the human organism consists of water.
