Imagine that you are walking in the Savannah Desert, and then… “Ahh!!!” a springbok pronked over you! Luckily, you didn’t get injured. The springbok has a tawny coat, with cinnamon-brown upper parts, and white underparts. They also have a reddish-brown band from the foreleg to the hind leg. The head of the springbok is white, but also has a dark streak through each eye. They also have heavily ridged lyre-shaped horns. Although the females have much slimmer horns. The springbok lives in Southern Africa, in the countries: Angola, Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa. Springboks also live near short grasses. shrub-lands, open plains, and savannahs. Their predators are : Cheetahs, Lions, Leopards, Caracals, and Crocodiles. Springboks have two main defense mechanisms to protect themselves from predators. When a predator is approaching, springboks will start to pronk (jumping in an odd way), or one springbok will alert the others. When a predator is approaching, springboks will start to pronk (jumping in an odd way), or one springbok will alert the others.
Springboks might start pronking to escape from predators. Doing this may have several functions.
Informative Essay
It is a common response to predators, telling them that the springbok is too strong for the predator to attack. Pronking can also secrete a strong, sweet odor that sends out visual, and olfactory messages to other springbok, because a predator is near. Pronking is a very useful defense mechanism. Springboks living in groups can confuse a predator. If this happens, the odds of being eaten are much lower. When a predator is approaching, multiple springboks can confuse a predator, because the predator can only chase one springbok at a time. Living in groups is also a very useful defense mechanism.

One early Saturday morning, Willow was hanging out with her friends outside when they started to argue about who was faster. Willow while drinking some water. Willow was watching her friend Marcus, and her boyfriend, Oliver racing. She almost choked on her water as they started to race. When Marcus finished the race first, Willow almost spit out her water, expecting her boyfriend to win. Oliver started to get mad, so Willow tried to comfort him, but it didn't work.
One early, crisp Saturday morning a springbok, named Willow was sitting at the stump of a tree, when her friend & boyfriend started to argue about who is faster. Marcus said, "I'm faster!" Oliver said, "no, I'm faster!" So Willow said, "well I think you should have a race to see who is faster." So they started the race, and Marcus finished first, and since Oliver was really competitive he was very mad.

Suddenly, Oliver & Marcus started fighting, so Willow tried to separate them, but the boys pushed her away. She screamed very seriously, "come on guys, stop fighting!" They wouldn't listen, so she got up, but just after Willow said that, it started to get dark and gloomy. There was a myth going around in their town that if it gets dark & gloomy it means that a predator is near. Willow didn't know if the myth was true or not but she tried getting the boys' attention and she said nervously, "guys, I think there's a predator coming; we need to leave.
After she said that, she finally got the boys' attention and they tried to find a place to hide, a little bit later, they found a hiding place. It was behind a big rock, where no one could see them. Suddenly, it started to rain. Willow felt her hair, "ew!" Willow said, disgusted. Then, Willow thought about what to do, "hmm.. we could find shelter indoors or we could stay here."
1. If you want to stay turn to pg. 9
2. If you want to find shelter indoors turn to pg. 10
Willow really thought about it; soon she decided to stay here with Oliver & Marcus. She told them, "guys I think we should stay." She said, nervously. This means that she would have to take the risk of using her defense mechanisms if a predator came. She heard a purr, "what was that?" she said. " I think it was a cheetah!" Marcus said, nervously. "We need to do something!"
1. If you want to use the defense mechanism of splitting up into groups go to pg. 13
2. If you don't want to use a defense mechanism go to pg.
Willow really thought about it; she thought about her comfy sweatpants, "they wouldn't be really comfy anymore." she thought. Soon enough, she decided to find shelter indoors so Willow told Oliver and Marcus, "guys I think we should find shelter indoors. "Okay!" Marcus said. "Fine," Oliver said, in a grunged voice. So they went to Willow's house to stay there. "Roooar!"
