This story is dedicated to all the children who feel different.

One day on a farm in the middle of nowhere, a crop of carrots popped up out of the dirt.

The carrots cheered and were very happy to finally get picked. They were probably so excited to be a part of a yummy salad or a tasty carrot cake. They all stood tall, showing off their bright orange color and straight shapes.

Yay, it's finally time to get eaten.
Hooray! I'm super excited to give all my nutrients to humans!

But first the big, giant farmer needs to pick the best and the healthiest-looking carrots.

Which can't be difficult, right? Carrots are just long, delicious-looking, and, of course, have a beautiful orange color.

However, one carrot didn’t seem to fit that description; it wasn’t long and straight like the other carrots. Instead, he had a funny face and weird shape, and his color wasn’t the usual bright orange; he was a mix of orange and purple!

The farmer picked up the funny-looking carrot and inspected him all around, up and down, side to side, and even held it up to the sunlight.

nobody will eat that carrot
It's so weird-looking.

The farmer set the funny-looking carrot aside and began sorting the other carrots into a basket. One by one, the smooth, straight, orange carrots were chosen.

The funny-looking carrot was in a different basket, one that seemed special. It was filled with other vegetables that looked unique, too: a tiny cabbage, a big eggplant, and a potato shaped like a heart.

The funny-looking carrot felt confused and scared. Why was he in the other basket? Was it because he wasn’t good enough? It sat quietly, feeling very sad.
