Teen mental health in NMacedonia

Teen mental health in North Macedonia is a growing concern, with various studies and reports highlighting significant challenges. A study focusing on the mental health of school-aged children found that

 45%    of      15-year-old 

girls reported experiencing 

depressive symptoms for more than a week.

The National Youth Strategy for Mental                 Health 2024-2026 was adopted in    

               January 2024, aiming to

-  promote mental well-being, 

- reduce associated risks, and 

- develop accessible, high-quality                             mental - health services for youth.

The World Health Organization reports a shortage of specialized mental health professionals for children and adolescents in the country.  

To address these issues, UNICEF and the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy launched a 

              "walk and talk" caravan 

to encourage open discussions about mental health among young people and promote a culture that encourages seeking help when needed

Additionally, the 

National Youth Strategy 2023-2027 

includes goals to improve mental well-being among young people by establishing mental health centers in all regions, creating counseling services within higher education institutions, and amending mental health laws to focus on prevention and educatio

These efforts reflect a growing recognition of the importance of mental health among adolescents in North Macedonia and a commitment to providing the necessary support and resources.

Every student deserves access to support for their emotional, social, and psychological well-being, regardless of their background, abilities, or  circumstances.

Schools are Safe Havens:

Educational institutions must be places where students feel secure, valued, and free to express themselves without fear of judgment.

Early Intervention is Key:

Addressing mental health challenges at an early stage can prevent long-term difficulties and ensure brighter futures.
