Deep in the heart of Queen Elizabeth National Park, lived a lovely little family of elephants, The Tembo Family. “Tembo” means elephant in Swahili.

Baby elephants weigh around 200 lbs at birth!
Mother Tembo, Father Tembo, and Baby Tembo lived a happy life full of love, eating, playing, and enjoying their beautiful habitat. They bathed in the streams, ate leaves and colorful fruit, and lived in harmony with other species.

African elephants are the world's largest land animal!
However, one dark day, the Tembo family's habitat became endangered by humans converting their environment into agricultural crop gardens. This deeply saddened the elephants, as they no longer felt safe on their own land. They were forced to make a journey into the unknown.

One of the largest causes of habitat loss in Queen E. National Park is Human-Animal conflict.
After migrating for what seemed like ages, the elephants decided to stop and rest. This is when they noticed their surroundings. Their beautiful national park was looking less and less green. Instead of trees and grasslands, they saw agriculture and development. There were trucks, smoke, and farmland where beautiful emerald forestry used to be. Their hearts filled with sadness, but they did not give up hope.

The sky was beginning to darken, so the Tembo family decided to keep moving. They migrated for another 8 miles before baby Tembo asked his mother and father for a water break. This is when they noticed something shocking. There was man-made agriculture where animals should be! What was once a watering hole for all species had been turned into yet another crop garden.

African elephants need to eat at least 300 pounds of food a day!
Because of their safety and the possiblility of being poached or hunted for their ivory, the Tembo Family retreated, and had no choice but to continue their search for a safe home.
