Hi! I’m Melia. I’m 14 years old and a freshman at El Dorado High School. I love working with younger kids and helping people, whether it’s through volunteering or babysitting. I live in California, balancing school, music, and my passion for helping others. In the future, I hope to work in a field where I can mentor and support young people, maybe as a teacher or counselor. I wrote Leo’s Big Feelings because emotions can feel HUGE when you’re little (and even when you’re big!). I wanted to show kids that it’s okay to feel upset but also how to handle those feelings in a kind way. I hope this story helps little ones understand their emotions and build stronger friendships.

Leo the little lion cub loved to play in the bright, sunny savanna. He ran, he jumped, and he laughed with his animal friends. But sometimes, Leo felt BIG feelings that made him want to roar!

One day, Leo’s best friend, Ellie the elephant, accidentally knocked over his favorite toy rock pile. Leo’s heart pounded. His face felt hot. “ROAR!” he shouted.

Ellie’s big ears drooped. “I didn’t mean to, Leo,” she said softly.
Leo stomped away, still feeling mad. He huffed and puffed until he saw his reflection in the river. His eyes looked sad. His tail drooped. He didn’t like feeling this way.

Just then, Mama Lion walked over and nuzzled Leo. “It’s okay to have big feelings, Leo,” she said. “Take a deep breath, count to three, and use your words.”

Leo took a deep breath. “One… two… three.” He turned to Ellie. “I was mad because I worked hard on my rock pile, but I know it was an accident. I’m sorry for yelling.”

Ellie’s ears perked up. “I understand, Leo. Let’s build it again—together!”
Leo smiled. He felt warm inside. His big feelings weren’t so big anymore. And best of all, he had his friend by his side.
