Introduction
The story of Lewis and Clark begins in 1803, when President Jefferson asked Lewis and Clark to go and explore the United States newly acquired territory the Louisiana Purchase.
Meet the Characters
Meriwether Lewis was a young officer, brave and determined. William Clark was an experienced explorer, known for his leadership. They gathered a group of men to join them on their journey. The team also included a young Shoshone woman named Sacagawea, who would help them find their way and make important connections with Native American tribes.

The Journey they took
In May 1804, the team set off from St. Louis, Missouri. They traveled by boat along the mighty Mississippi River, moving westward into the vast wilderness. The river was powerful, and the weather was unpredictable, but the explorers were determined to keep going.

The Mississippi River
The journey wasn’t easy. The river currents were strong, and the team faced many challenges. Sometimes the water was too shallow, and they had to carry their boats over the rocks. But Lewis and Clark knew that every obstacle was just another step toward their goal.

Winter at Fort Mandan
As the winter set in, the team built a fort called Fort Mandan in present-day North Dakota. They spent the cold months preparing for the next part of their journey. They also met with Native American tribes who taught them how to survive in the wilderness.

The Rocky Mountains
In the spring, they faced the towering Rocky Mountains. The path was steep and difficult. Sacagawea, who had once lived in the mountains, helped guide the team through the rocky terrain. Her knowledge was essential to their success.
