Chapter 2: Hidden Depths
Days passed, and Maya observed her captors, searching for clues to their motives and weaknesses. Kai was different. He spoke softly and treated her with unexpected kindness, leaving her puzzled. She noticed how he seemed at odds with the rest, always lingering in the shadows. One evening, as the sun dipped into the horizon, he slipped her a piece of fruit and whispered, “I didn’t want this for you.” Maya, though wary, sensed sincerity in his words.
Kai began showing her the island’s secret places—a hidden waterfall surrounded by orchids, ancient carvings on cave walls that whispered of a lost civilization. Through these small acts, Maya began to see the layers of Kai’s existence. He wasn’t her captor by choice but rather a prisoner of fate.
