is for Articles of Confederation
The Articles were America’s first constitution. It gave power to the states, but the national government was too weak to solve problems. That’s why they were replaced by the U.S. Constitution.

is for Bill of Rights
These are the first ten amendments to the Constitution. They guarantee basic freedoms, like freedom of speech and the right to a fair trial. They’re the foundation for protecting individual rights in the U.S.

is for Checks and Balances

Each branch of government—Legislative, Executive, and Judicial—can check or limit the power of the others. This system keeps any one branch from becoming too powerful, ensuring fairness and balance.
Fed 51, don't forget!

is for Due Process

Due process means the state and federal governments must follow fair procedures before taking away your rights, introduced in the 5th and 14th amendments, whether it’s in a trial or when arresting someone, due process makes sure everything is done legally and justly.

is for Electoral College

This system determines how we elect the president. Voters in each state choose electors, who then vote for the president. While it seems complicated, it’s meant to balance power between big and small states.

is for Federalism

Federalism is the division of power between the national government and state governments. Some powers are shared, while others are unique to either level. It’s like having different levels of government working together.

is for Gerrymandering

Gerrymandering is when district boundaries are manipulated to favor one political party. States cannot base the division on race alone, but it can be a factor, said Shaw v. Reno.

is for House of Representatives

The House is one of the two chambers of Congress. Representatives serve two-year terms, and the number of representatives a state gets depends on its population. They propose and vote on new laws.

is for Incumbency

Incumbents, or people already in office, have a big advantage in elections. They’re more recognizable, have more campaign funds, and know the ropes of government. It’s hard to beat someone who’s already in the game.

is for Judicial Review

This is the power of the courts to review laws and actions by the government to make sure they follow the Constitution. If something doesn’t match the Constitution, courts can declare it unconstitutional, according to Marbury v. Madison

is for Keynesian Economics

This economic theory says the government should step in to boost the economy during times of downturn. By spending money and increasing demand, the government helps kickstart economic growth. But you won't see a conservative with that thought!

is for Lobbying

Lobbying is when individuals or groups try to influence lawmakers to pass laws that benefit them. They meet with officials, run ads, and use other strategies to make their voices heard in politics.

is for Mandates

A mandate is when the government tells states or local governments to do something. Sometimes they provide money (funded mandate), and other times they don’t (unfunded mandate), but states have to follow the rule either way.

is for Necessary and Proper

This part of the Constitution gives Congress the power to make all laws that are necessary to carry out its duties. It’s flexible, allowing the government to pass laws on new issues not explicitly mentioned in the Constitution.

is for Open Primaries

An open primary is a type of election where voters don’t have to be registered with a political party to vote. They can pick any candidate, no matter their party affiliation. It’s more inclusive for voters.

is for Political Socialization

Political socialization is how we develop our political beliefs. Family, friends, school, and the media all play a role in shaping how we view politics, government, and what we think is important.
