Long ago, there were two neighboring kingdoms in Central Java; Pengging and Baka.

Pengging Kingdom was ruled by a wise king named King Prabu Damar Moyo, while Baka Kingdom was ruled by the fearsome giant named Prabu Baka, who sought to expand his territory.

One day, the ruler of the Kingdom Baka; Prabu Baka, launched an attack, and invaded the Pengging Kingdom.

In response, Pengging’s ruler, King Prabu Damar Moyo, sent his son, Raden Bandung Bondowoso; a warrior with supernatural powers, to fight Prabu Baka and defend their land.

After a fierce battle, Bandung Bondowoso triumphed and defeated Prabu Baka, killing him, and conquering the Baka Kingdom.

After Roro Jonggrang heard the news, she was heartbroken and was grieving the loss of her father, but not long after, the Pengging army captured the palace, and Bandung Bondowoso entered the palace.

There, he met Roro Jonggrang, and was mesmerized by her beauty, falling in love immediately.

Roro Jonggrang despised Bandung Bondowoso and was reluctant to marry the man who was responsible for killing her father; so, she set two impossible conditions for the marriage.

“I will marry you, but only if you fulfill two tasks. First, you must dig a well, and name it Jalatunda. Second, you must build me a thousand temples. Everything must be completed before sunrise,”
She declared.

Hearing her request, Raden Bandung Bondowoso, who was confident in his magical abilities, agreed without hesitation, and started working on the tasks.

Using his supernatural powers, he managed to complete building the well in only a few hours. “The first task fulfilled!” he exclaimed proudly. “Now, for the second task, I will need my spirit souldiers to assist me.”

With a powerful spell, Raden Bandung Bondowoso called upon his spirit souldiers to help him, and by midnight, 999 temples were completed.
