I want to thank all my English teachers who helped me learn how to write stories. You made writing fun and taught me how to use my imagination. Your kind words always encouraged me to do my best.
A special thank you to my loving Headmistress, Ms. Adeeba Waseem. You are a constant source of inspiration and the reason I believed I could write this story. Your encouragement to participate in the VOGF story writing event helped me discover my ability to write. Thank you, Ma'am.
To my parents—thank you for being my greatest strength. Your love and support mean the world to me. And to my amazing siblings, thank you for always cheering me on and being there for me.
This book is for all of you.

Maya was a quiet girl who loved to read. She didn’t mind playing with her classmates, but she loved sitting under the big banyan tree at the back of the school even more. That tree was like her best friend. She named it Whisper, because when the wind blew, its leaves made a soft whispering sound, like it was trying to tell her something.
Maya called the tree Whisper. When the wind blew through its leaves, it made a soft sound like the tree was talking to her. She imagined it was sharing secrets from the forest or stories from the past. Whisper felt like a friend, the kind who didn’t need to speak out loud to be understood.
Every day during lunch or after school, Maya sat under Whisper with a book in her lap. She read about forests, animals, the weather, and the Earth. She learned how trees give us clean air. How their roots hold the soil to stop floods, and how forests are homes for many living things.
Maya noticed things other people didn’t. When the birds stopped singing in the mornings, she noticed. When the air felt warmer than usual, she noticed. When the little stream behind the school began to dry up, she noticed. But most people just kept going with their day, not seeing what was changing around them.
One day, while walking home from school, Maya saw something that made her stop. A group of men with big machines were near the small forest behind her village. They were cutting trees.
“We’re going to build new shops here,” one man said, smiling like it was great news.
But Maya didn’t smile. She felt a heavy feeling in her chest.
She ran home and told her parents. “They’re cutting down the forest. All the trees, gone!”
Her parents looked tired. Her father said, “That’s how life is, Maya. The village is growing, and we need more space.”
She told her teacher the next day. She nodded slowly and said, “Sometimes we cut trees for progress. We can't do anything .”
But Maya didn’t agree. She had read about what happens when trees are lost. The Earth changes. The animals leave.
The soil dries up. The floods come.
A few weeks later, many trees were gone. The forest looked bare and sad. When Maya walked by, it felt quiet—too quiet. No birds. No buzzing insects. Just dry earth and stumps where trees used to stand.
