PORTUGUESE RECREATIONS


He (1832–1904) was a prominent Greek painter and one of the leading figures of the 19th-century Greek art scene. Born on the island of Tinos, known for its artistic tradition, Lytras studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts and later at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under the renowned painter Karl von Piloty. This education placed him at the center of the Munich School style, which greatly influenced his work. Lytras is best known for his genre paintings, portraits, and historical scenes, which often combined academic precision with elements of Greek folklore and everyday life. His works reflect a deep interest in national identity, rural life, and human emotion. He became a professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts, where he shaped a generation of Greek artists. Nikephóros Lýtras is considered a foundational figure in modern Greek painting, blending Western academic techniques with a uniquely Greek sensibility. He died in Athens in 1904.

PAULA REGO

Paula Rego
She (1935-2022) was a renowned Portuguese-British artist known for her powerful and storytelling paintings. Born in Lisbon, Portugal, she later moved to London to study art at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art. Rego's artwork often featured bold, dramatic scenes that explored themes from fairy tales, politics, and women's experiences. Her unique style combined elements of folk art and modern painting techniques, making her one of the most influential artists of her time. She became the first artist-in-residence at the National Gallery in London and received numerous awards for her contributions to art. Her paintings often challenged social norms and brought attention to important issues, making her not just an artist but also a powerful voice for change through art.




Diego Velázquez

Diego Velázquez
He was a Spanish painter and the main artist at the court of King Philip IV of Spain. He was an individualistic artist of the contemporary Baroque period, important as a portraitist. In addition to countless interpretations of scenes of historical and cultural significance, he painted numerous portraits of the Spanish royal family, other notable European figures, and commoners, culminating in the production of his masterpiece, Las Meninas (1656). Since the first quarter of the 19th century, Velázquez's work has been a model for realist and impressionist painters, especially Édouard Manet, who claimed that Velázquez was the "painter of painters." Since then, more modern artists, including the Spaniards Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dalí, as well as the Anglo-Irish painter Francis Bacon, who paid tribute to Velázquez by recreating several of his most famous works. The vast majority of his paintings are in the Prado Museum
