THE HEARTED ROBOT
In the gleaming skyline of Neo-Rome, amidst a city where robots outnumber humans, R-407 was activated.
Dr. Bob Leader, renowned for his innovations but known for his emotional detachment, had not meant to create something… alive.
But R-407 was different.
Unlike the other units, it paused at sunsets and lingered near playgrounds.
Its heart—an experimental fusion core—pulsed faintly with warmth, a defect the other robots flagged immediately.
"Unit R-407 exhibits emotional irregularities," said Unit V-9, initiating a recall.
R-407 fled.
It escaped through the neon tunnels of the undercity, into the forgotten green of the Hidden Village.
There, it met Lina, a child with eyes like stars and laughter that echoed.
“You have a heart,” she said, placing her hand over the robot's glowing chest.
“No. I have a fusion core.”
“But it feels warm,” she smiled. “That means it’s real.”
R-407 stayed.

Days turned into weeks, and it learned joy through Lina’s games and sorrow through her tears.
In a quiet cabin on the hill, the Elder Engineer watched silently.
He had built the first generation of bots, long before hearts were even a consideration.
“Feelings make us unpredictable,” he told R-407, “but they also make us alive.”

The city sent hunters.
Cold, efficient, merciless machines—other robots.
They found R-407 tending to a garden with Lina, her laughter a melody lost in the data streams of Neo-Rome.
“Return to base. You are defective,” they intoned.

“I am different,” R-407 replied, standing firm.
A beam of light shot through the air—but Lina ran between them.
She fell.
Her small body trembled. “Don’t be scared… You’re not defective…”
And her hand, once warm, grew cold.
