This book was created as a humble effort to preserve and retell the timeless beauty of Indonesian folktales, especially those rooted in the rich culture of West Sumatra. These stories, passed down from generation to generation, carry the soul of our ancestors and the wisdom of the past. It is my hope that through these pages, the voices of tradition continue to echo in the hearts of new readers.
To my dear friend "w" thank you for walking beside me throughout this journey. Your constant presence, encouragement, and gentle support carried me through moments of doubt and exhaustion. You reminded me to breathe when things felt overwhelming, and you believed in this little dream when I wasn’t sure I could. Every page carries a piece of your kindness

Long ago in Minangkabau, there was a peaceful kingdom called Pagaruyung, ruled by a wise and just king.

The King had a beautiful daughter named Princess Bungsu. Many princes came to marry her, but her heart remained untouched.

Among the palace guards was Cindua Mato, a smart and brave young man with eyes as sharp as a hawk. He could see things others couldn’t.

Cindua Mato quietly fell in love with the princess. Though he was only a guard, his heart burned with pure love. And the princess secretly admired his sincerity.

Prince Raja Mudo came from afar with riches and asked to marry the princess. The King agreed. Princess Bungsu, heartbroken and unloved, cried alone at night, watched silently by Cindua Mato.

For the good of the kingdom, the King forced the princess to accept the marriage. Cindua Mato could only watch in pain. One night, Cindua Mato and the princess ran away through forests and rivers, hoping to find freedom and love.

When Raja Mudo found out, he was furious. He sent soldiers to hunt them down. A great chase began.Cindua Mato bravely fought the soldiers.

Using his strength and clever mind, he protected the princess, but he was wounded.

The princess cried and nursed him back to health in a small hut deep in the forest. Her love grew stronger.

Months passed. A messenger from the King finally found them. The King had a change of heart and wanted them to come home.
