Mira adında küçük bir kız vardı. İkinci sınıfa yeni başlamıştı ama bir dersten hiç hoşlanmıyordu: Matematik. Sayılar onun için hep karışıktı, biraz sıkıcıydı, biraz da korkutucu. Sayılar karınca sürüsü gibi önünde dolaşır ama bir türlü dizilmezdi kafasında.

 There was a little girl called Mira. She had just started second grade, but she didn't like one subject: Maths. Numbers were always complicated for her, a little boring, a little scary. Numbers were like a swarm of ants in front of her, but they could not be arranged in her head.

Özellikle “saatler” konusunu hiç sevmezdi. “Neden akrep kısa, yelkovan uzun?” diye sorar, bir türlü mantığını kavrayamazdı. Her matematik dersinde içini bir sıkıntı kaplar, saatin akrep ve yelkovanı bile ona kaşlarını çatmış gibi gelirdi.

Ama bu yıl sınıf öğretmeni farklıydı: Öğretmen Gülce. Gülce Öğretmen, matematiğin sadece rakamlardan ibaret olmadığını söylüyordu. İlk gün tahtaya büyükçe bir daire çizdi ve sınıfa şöyle dedi:

“Bugün kendi saatlerimizi yapacağız!”

He especially disliked the subject of ‘clocks’. ‘Why is the hour hand short and the minute hand long?’ he would ask, unable to grasp the logic. In every maths lesson, he felt a sense of boredom, and even the hour and minute hands of the clock seemed like a frown to him.

But this year the class teacher was different: Teacher Gülce. Teacher Gülce said that maths was not just about numbers. On the first day, she drew a big circle on the blackboard and said to the class:

‘Today we will make our own clocks!’

Renkli kartonlar, keçeli kalemler, pipetlerden yapılmış akrep ve yelkovanlarla herkes kendi saatini oluşturdu. Mira, kendi saatini süslerken eğlendiğini fark etti. Akrebin neden kısa, yelkovanın neden uzun olduğunu anlamaya başladı bile.

Everyone created their own clock with coloured cardboard, markers, hour and minute hands made of straws. Mira realised that she was having fun decorating her own clock. She has already started to understand why the hour hand is short and the minute hand is long.

Ertesi hafta Gülce Öğretmen, matematik defterlerini değil, müzik kutusunu getirdi.

“Bugün matematik şarkısı yazıyoruz!” dedi.

Sınıf şaşırmıştı. Sayılarla şarkı olur muydu hiç? Ama Gülce Öğretmen “3 çarpı 4, hadi söyle durma! 12 eder, şaşma sakın buna!” diyerek başlattı şarkısını.

Mira, ritme kapıldı. Kafiyeli sayılar birden kulağa hoş gelmeye başlamıştı.

The following week, Teacher Gülce brought the music box, not the maths notebooks. Today we are writing a maths song!’ she said.The class was surprised. Would there ever be a song with numbers? But Teacher Gülce said, "3 times 4, go ahead and sing it! It's 12, don't be surprised!" she started her song.Mira got caught up in the rhythm. The rhyming numbers suddenly started to sound nice.

Bir başka gün sınıfta büyük bir hedef tahtası kuruldu. Gülce Öğretmen masanın üzerine rengârenk laputlar yerleştirdi. Her birinin üstünde sayılar vardı.

“Bugün dört işlemli hedef oyunu oynayacağız!” dedi.

Çocuklar sırayla laputları devirdi. Mira, 4 ve 6 yazılı olan iki laputu düşürdü.

Gülce Öğretmen sordu: “Toplamı kaç eder?”  Mira hiç düşünmeden “10!” diye bağırdı.  “Peki çarparsak?”  “24!”  Oyun öyle eğlenceliydi ki, Mira artık dört işlem yapmaktan zevk almaya başlamıştı.

Another day, a big target board was set up in the classroom. Teacher Gülce placed colourful laputs on the table. There were numbers on each of them.  ‘Today we will play a four-operation target game!’ she said.  The children took turns knocking over the poultices. Mira dropped two poultices with 4 and 6 written on them.  Teacher Gülce asked: ‘What is the sum?’   Mira shouted ‘10!’ without thinking.  ‘And if we multiply?’  ‘24!’  The game was so fun that Mira started to enjoy doing four operations.
