Joe Can Say No is written for preschool children ages 3 to 5. This book helps young children learn boundary-setting and communication skills. It teaches children how to say “no” respectfully when they do not want to do something or when they feel uncomfortable. It also encourages children to listen to others and respect their friends’ boundaries.
Instructions:
Read this book when talking about friendships, feelings, or play time.
After reading this book, discuss what happened and have them practice saying no in a respectful manner.
Use the extension activities to support learning in a fun, meaningful way.




Joe has friends who like to play.



Sometimes they ask Joe to play with toys


Sometimes they ask Joe for a hug.


Do you want to play?
No thank you!
But, Joe knows he doesn't always have to say "yes."
If Joe does not want to play, he can say
"No thank you!"


Do you want a hug?
No thank you!
If Joe does not want a hug,
he can say, "No thank you!"


If Joe doesn't like something, he a can say
"No, please stop."
No, please stop touching my hand. Thank you.

Its okay for Joe to say "No."
When Joe says "No" to his friends kindly, he respects his body and feelings.



Joe's friends can say "No" too.
When we listen to others, we show kindness and respect.
Activity #1
Create short social interactions involving Joe (example: Joe is coloring and his friend asks him to play. He wants to finish coloring.).
Ask the children when Joe could say to his friend, practicing saying "no" in a kind manner.
Activity #2
Use puppets to model respectful "no" phrases.
Have the children ask the puppet questions, and model what the puppet could say in response.
Activity #3
Sing this short song after reading the book, and even during transitions as a reminder of the story.
No means no,
That's okay!
No means no,
and walk away!
