Jack has a secret that he is too embarrassed to tell his parents. He struggles to read. Words don't make sense on the pages and they seemed jumbled up. He doesn't think he will ever be able to read like his classmates do. This makes him sad and scared.

Reading time

Jack loves to go to school and he especially loves his teacher Mrs. Hain. But When it's time for independent reading in Mrs. Hain's class, Jack feels a knot in his stomach. Letters jump around on the page, and words don't make sense. He often feels frustrated and falls behind his classmates.
Mrs. Hain notices Jack's growing struggles with reading. She doesn't want him to fall behind, so she decides to reach out to his parents.

Mrs. Hain invites Jack's parents to a meeting. She shares her observations about his reading difficulties. Jack's parents share similar concerns. They tell Mrs. Hain that Jack does not like to read by himself.

Mrs. Hain explains that the school can conduct a special evaluation to understand why reading is so hard for Jack. She provides Jack's parents with a "Notice of Procedural Safeguards," explaining their rights, including the right to consent to or refuse the evaluation, and their right to be involved in every step. After discussing it with Jack, they give their written consent for the evaluation

Dr. Chen, the school psychologist, begins the evaluation process. She uses a variety of tests and observations to get a picture of Jack's strengths and challenges. She explains each step to Jack and his parents. The evaluation reveals that Jack has dyslexia, which is a unique way of processing written language. Dr. Chen explains the evaluation results to Jack's parents in detail, answering all their questions. She tells them about the upcoming IEP meeting, where a plan will be created to help Jack. Dr. Chen explains to Jack's parents that IEP stands for Individualized Educational Program.
