THE THREE CITIES
STUNNING ROCK FORMATIONS
The Maltese landscape has an attractive and distinctive character and their protection and sustainable management has significant environmental, economic and social benefits. The natural and rural landscapes of the islands are dominated by karstic rock formations, Mediterranean-type flora and terraced agricultural fields. Humans have inhabited the islands for at least 7000 years, while natural processes have influenced the Maltese landscape character over time.
ST JOHN'S CO CATHEDRAL
The conventual church built by the Order of the Knights of St John was completed in 1577, soon after the Great Siege. The Order dedicated this church to St John the Baptist. Over the years, the church was transformed from a basic Mannerist church into the most outstanding treasure. Throughout the centuries, every grand master and many knights donated gifts of high artistic value and made enormous contributions to enrich the church, with the best works of art by leading artists of the time. The façade is buttressed by two large bell towers topped with octagonal spires. The church is rectangular in shape with a wide nave, roofed over with a barrel vault. The oratory and the sacristy were built in 1604. The precincts also include a cemetery.
