As soon as I stepped into school, I knew something was wrong. The hallways were empty, all the lockers were closed, and even the lights hummed like they were nervous. My sneakers squeaked on the floor, the only sound breaking silence. It felt like the whole building was holding its breath.
I walked past empty class rooms, and every seat in the classrooms were empty. Papers were neatly stacked, pencils lined up, as if everyone had just disappeared all at once. The silence was so thick it made my ears ring. My throat tightened. Where is everyone?
I'm Lena, and all I wanted was a normal morning. But now I need to figure out why the school is so quiet. I gripped the straps of my back tighter and forced myself to keep moving, even though my heart was pounding harder with every step I take.
Suddenly, I saw a shadow sprint across the hall. I froze. "Hello?" I whispered, my voice echoing back at me. When I reached the gym, my stomach dropped-dozens of students stood frozen like statues, their eyes wide and unblinking. That's when I realized I wasn't alone, and something else was terribly wrong.
Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a small boy bent over hidden behind the bleachers. His eyes shimmered with tears, but he was moving. I rushed over. "What happened?" I whispered. He shook his head. "I don't know. One second everyone was normal, and then... they froze."
I looked back at the students. Their stillness made the silence even heavier. My chest felt tight, but I took the boys hand.
The boy tugged at her sleeve" Why us? why are we still moving?" "I don't know but don't worry. We'll figure this out." My words were brave, but inside, I was terrified.
Then I noticed something- the intercom light above the gym door was glowing red. A low hum filled the room. Could it be controlling them? My heart was racing, I ran and yanked the cord from the wall. With the loud pop, the humming stopped.
One by one, the students blinked, gasped, and began to move again. Laughter and chatter returned to the gym like a rushing wave of sound. The silence was gone. I smiled at the boy. "Told you we'd fix it." But deep down, I wondered who turned the intercom on in the first place.
