Chapter 1
Side by Side
With her backpack swinging off her shoulders, Aisha ran through the school gates. She saw Laila, tossing her braid with a cheeky smile, waiting beside the large oak tree in the courtyard.
“Late again!” Laila called, stamping her foot playfully.
Aisha rolled her eyes and said, “l had to finish my math homework.” “I can’t run like you, you know.”
Laila chuckled. “Pfft. You’re constantly coming up with excuses. Hurry, let’s go to the classroom!
Laila had bounded forward, her laughter resonating around the courtyard before Aisha could object. Pretending to be irritated, but yet grinning, Aisha ran after her.
When the bell rang, they were seated next to each other in their favorite corner of the classroom, chatting about the newest rumors at school and making plans to pull a tiny practical joke on their instructor the following week. When they were paired for a scientific project in grade 4, their relationship was born.
They had been inseparable ever since then, exchanging meals, secrets, and even little disagreements that lasted no more than a few minutes.
You know,“Aisha said, nudging Laila with her elbow, “we make a great team. I mean, if anyone could survive Mrs. Khan’s pop quizzes, it’s us.”
Laila grinned. “Obviously. Who else was able to think of the “Invisible Homework” concept?
They chuckled as they recalled how they had persuaded the teacher that a missing work had been “accidentally eaten by the classroom hamster,” which was obviously untrue. They discussed anything from books to their covert weekend plans as they strolled home together after school, bags in tow.
Aisha cherished these strolls. She came to understand how much Laila meant to her in these moments; not just as a friend, but also as someone who could relate to her without needing an explanation.
“I think grade 5 is going to be our best year yet,” Laila stated abruptly, pausing to gaze up at the sky.
Aisha grinned as her chest began to warm up. Indeed. I believe you are correct.
They had no idea how their friendship would be put up to the test in the upcoming months.
The first week of grade 5 started like any other. Aisha and Laila sat together in their corner, trading secret notes and rolling their eyes at long lessons. Everything felt normal, until the morning assembly.
The principal’s voice echoed across the courtyard. “Students, I have an important announcement. Due to financial difficulties, our school may not remain open next year.
Chapter 2
Bad News
We are doing our best, but unless things improve…” He paused, his face heavy with worry. “This school might have to close its doors.”
Murmurs and gasps swept through the audience. Aisha stopped. Shut down the school? The words felt like a stone sinking into her stomach. She looked at Laila, who had wide, incredulous eyes.
They sat in silence after assembly, forgetting their half-eaten meals. Laila finally said something.
“They can’t simply shut it down. Our school is here! Even so, where would we go?
“I’m not sure,” Aisha said quietly. “But perhaps… perhaps we can do something.”
Laila slammed the table with her hand. “We must. This cannot be allowed to occur!”
The girls couldn’t stop thinking about it for the next few days. They saw their professors looking weary, their classmates murmuring, and
even parents talking about the news outside the school gates.
As Aisha say on the swings one afternoon, she suggested that we create a petition. Have everyone sign it. Prove to the principal the importance of this school.
Determination lighted up Laila’s face. Indeed! Additionally, we could create posters, speak with parents, and perhaps even send the mucipal council a letter!
“That sounds significant,” Aisha said uneasily.
Laila pulled herself. “So what? We’ve accomplished a larger goal. Do you recall the hamster assignment trick?
Aisha’s heart warmed, but they both started giggling. Laila always managed to make the seemingly unattainable seem doable.
They stopped playing games and eating ice cream in the afternoons after that day. Rather, they were chock-full of names, posters and plans to save their beloved institution.
Even though Aisha didn’t express it out, she secretly believed that nothing was impossible for her and Laila as long as they were together.
Chapter 3
Hands Together
Aisha and Laila laid down their notebooks on the library table the following afternoon. There were papers all over the place, including incomplete letters, lists of names, and crude drawings of posters.
Aisha rubbed her forehead and mumbled, “This looks like a mess.”
Laila smiled. “It’s genius in progress, not a mess.”
They put in more effort than ever during the course of the following week. They requested signatures on their petition from parents and students. While some gave them encouragement, others simply gave them a courteous smile and turned to leave. Some even referred to it as “a waste of time.”
Aisha grumbled one day after spending a long afternoon gathering signatures. “What if it’s insufficient? What if the school is still closed?
Laila took her friend’s hand in hers. “Hey. We’re not going to give up. Not till the last minute.
Reenergized, they worked late into the night creating posters that said, “SAVE THE SCHOOL!” and even persuaded a teacher to assist them in polishing a letter to the council.
Their efforts paid off by the end of the month. The principal declared that further support had been agreed upon by the council. The school would remain operational.
