For the ones who stay up late, reading under the covers with a flashlight.
For the kids who like the dark, even when it looks back at them.
And for anyone who ever thought it was just a dream.

The hallway was long and darker than I thought it would be. My phone light barely worked, and the walls looked like they had black stains that dripped down forever. The smell was gross, like wet dust mixed with something rotten. Every step I took made a crunch, like bugs under my shoes. I tried not to think about it, but my stomach felt heavy, like it wanted me to turn back.
Then I saw her.
At the very end of the hallway, a girl was standing in the shadows. She didn’t move. She didn’t talk. I couldn’t even see her face, only her dress and her outline. The shadows seemed to keep her hidden on purpose. My chest hurt and I wanted to run, but my legs wouldn’t listen. The air grew colder, and I knew I wasn’t alone anymore.
I blinked, hoping she would disappear, but she didn’t. She was still there, standing like a statue at the end of the hallway. My phone light flickered again, and for a second, I thought I saw her head tilt just a little, like she was looking right at me. My heart started beating so loud I thought it was going to shake the whole house.
“Who are you?” I whispered, but the sound of my voice felt wrong, like it didn’t belong here.
The girl didn’t answer. Instead, the shadows around her seemed to grow darker, stretching along the floor toward me. I stepped back, but the hallway behind me looked even longer now, like it was trapping me. I could hear faint whispers, but I couldn’t tell what they were saying. All I knew was that I wasn’t supposed to be here.
My hand was shaking so bad I almost dropped my phone. The light hit the wall, and for a second, I thought I saw something written there. Letters scratched deep into the paint. I squinted and read it: “DON’T FOLLOW HER.”
My stomach twisted. I looked back down the hallway, but the girl was gone. The spot where she stood was empty now, just shadows moving like smoke. I wanted to run, but my feet wouldn’t move fast enough. Every step I took made the floor creak louder, like the house wanted everyone to know I was inside.
Then I heard it. Soft footsteps behind me, matching mine. I froze, holding my breath. When I finally turned around, the hallway was empty—but I could still hear the sound of someone walking.
The footsteps got louder, even though nobody was there. I backed up, my phone shaking in my hand, and the light hit the wall again. That’s when I saw her. The girl wasn’t at the end of the hallway anymore. She was closer. Way closer. Only a few feet away now.
Her head was tilted, and her hair covered most of her face, but I could see her eyes glowing faint through the shadows. Cold air rushed past me, like she had brought winter with her. My breath came out white, even though it wasn’t supposed to.
I wanted to scream, but the sound stayed stuck in my throat. My body felt frozen, like the shadows were wrapping around me. The girl took one slow step forward, and the floor groaned under her weight.
I realized I couldn’t escape.
The girl moved again, and this time I heard a low creak, like the hallway itself was bending under her. My phone light flickered and went out for just a second, but when it came back, she was even closer. Her face was still hidden, but I could hear her breathing now, slow and heavy, like she had been waiting for me all along.
I stumbled back, hitting the wall. My fingers brushed against the scratches again, the words carved deep: “DON’T FOLLOW HER.” My heart was pounding so hard I thought it would burst out of my chest.
Then her hand lifted, pale and thin, reaching toward me. The air grew so cold it hurt to breathe. I wanted to run, but the hallway behind me looked endless, like it would never let me out.
That’s when her whisper finally reached me.
Her lips moved, but the sound was too soft to understand. It was like she was speaking from inside the walls, the words twisting and fading before they reached me. I leaned forward without meaning to, like something was pulling me closer.
The shadows around her feet spread wider, crawling across the floor like black water. My phone light flickered again, and this time the beam caught her hand. Her fingers were long and bony, nails sharp like claws. She reached out, her mouth still moving, whispering words I wasn’t meant to hear.
I pressed my hands against my ears, but the sound didn’t stop. It was inside my head now, rattling around like an echo. My knees felt weak, and I thought I was going to fall.
The only thing louder than her whisper was my own heartbeat.
The sound was no longer a whisper. It roared inside my head, words I still couldn’t understand, but I felt them tearing at me. The shadows rose up from the floor, wrapping around my legs like chains. I tried to pull free, kicking and clawing at the ground, but the darkness only tightened.
Her grip on my arm got stronger. I felt my skin go numb, like she was draining the warmth out of me. The hallway stretched longer, twisting and bending, the walls groaning like they wanted to swallow me whole.
“No!” I shouted, my voice cracking, but it barely echoed. The girl leaned closer, her hair brushing my cheek, and for the first time I smelled her—old, rotten, like the hallway itself.
Then the shadows yanked hard, pulling me toward her.
The floor gave way beneath me, turning soft like tar. The shadows wrapped around my arms and chest, squeezing so tight I couldn’t breathe. I clawed at the ground, but my fingers only scraped the stains, peeling them like wet paint. The girl’s eyes burned into me, black and endless, pulling me deeper.
I tried to scream, but no sound came out. The darkness filled my mouth, my ears, even my lungs. It felt like I was drowning without water. My phone light blinked one last time before vanishing, leaving me in pitch black.
The last thing I saw was her smile—wide, crooked, and full of teeth that didn’t look human.
Then the shadows swallowed me whole.
It felt like I was falling forever. The air was heavy and cold, like I was sinking underwater, but there was no water—only blackness. My chest burned, and my hands clawed at nothing.
Then, my feet hit the ground. Hard.
I was standing in a hallway again… but it wasn’t the same one. The walls were darker, twisted, and dripping with something thick and red. The air buzzed, like the whole place was alive and breathing. Behind me, there was no door. No way out.
Far ahead, in the distance, I saw her—the same girl, but now she was smiling, wider than before. She started walking toward me, slow and careful, like she knew I had nowhere else to run.
