It was a warm spring morning in Willow Creek. The sky was clear, and the trees swayed gently in the breeze. Mia and her little brother Jay loved days like these!

"Race you to the park!" Jay shouted as they pedaled down Male Street.
That week, their school had started learning about the weather. Ms. Lopez, Jay's science teacher, said,
"We'll be studying tornadoes! We will begin by looking at how they form and then later discuss how to stay safe during a tornado."

Mia thought tornadoes sounded cool and exciting, but Jay could not stop thinking about how scary and dangerous they sounded.

Then, Ms. Lopez brought out a BIG weather map. She pointed to the symbols and explained,
"Preparedness means having a plan BEFORE a storm happens."
The school asked everyone to make a family tornado plan as homework. Mia decided she and Jay would help their parents make one that night!

Later at home, Mia said, "For school, we need to make a tornado plan!"
Dad nodded. "Good idea Mia! We should pick a safe room and make sure it's somewhere without windows!"
Mom said, "The basement will work! Let's also make an emergency kit with water, flashlights, and batteries!"

The next day, Mia and Jay gathered supplies: Canned food, Flashlights, Bandages, and a Radio.
"Don't forget Sparky's leash!" Jay said, "He's part of the family too."
They packed everything neatly in a backpack labeled "Tornado Kit."

A few days later, dark clouds rolled in over Willow Creek. The wind howled louder than usual.
Mia looked up and said, "Those don't look like normal rain clouds."
Mom checked her phone. "There's a tornado watch. Let's stay alert and grab our Tornado Kit."
Suddenly the town sirens began to wail. The screen on Dad's phone flashed: TORNADO WARNING. TAKE COVER NOW.
Jay gasped, "It's happening!" Dad said calmly, "Okay team, remember our plan. Everyone to the basement now!"
The family grabbed their tornado kit and hurried downstairs.
Mom said, "Stay away from the windows!" Jay clutched Sparky tightly. "I'm scared," he said.
Mia whispered, "It's okay, Jay. We practiced for this. We'll be safe!"

Outside, the wind roared. The lights flickered, and the sound of cracking branches echoed. Mia held Jay's hand.
Dad turned up the radio to hear updates from the weather service.

After what felt like forever, the wind finally quieted.
"Is it over?" Jay asked. Dad nodded. "Looks like it. Let's wait for the all clear before going upstairs."
They listened until the radio said it was safe to come out.

When they opened the basement door, their hearts sank. A couple windows were broken, and branches were scattered across the yard. "Wow," Mia said, "the storm was strong"
Mom smiled. "But we're all safe. That's what matters most."
