Long, long ago, Europeans discovered North America.
Led by a brave Spanish Explorer, Christopher Columbus, Europeans discovered America in 1492.
Though this was not where Columbus thought he would end up, this would change everything that Europeans thought they knew about the world.....

While Europeans were discovering more and more of North America, they also discovered a very different group of people -- Native Americans!
One of the groups of people that they encountered were the Iroquois.
The Iroquois were a group of Native Americans that lived in forests in the Northeast.
They built longhouses that many families shared.
They all worked together in a group of tribes called the Iroquois Confederacy.
The Native Americans would exchange knowledge - planting and farming - for weapons and tools.

Another group that they encountered were the Lakota. These Native Americans were fierce warriors who travelled about hunting buffalo in the Mid-West region of North America.
They lived in homes they called tee-pees, that were made of Animal skins and wood.
Sometimes the Europeans and Lakota did not get along, but when they did, they would trade things like tools and weapons for animal skins.

In the very northwest region of North America, where the ground is frozen and covered in ice, the Europeans encountered the Inuit.
The Inuit lived in very cold places like Alaska and northern Canada.
They built homes from snow called igloos.
To survive, they hunted animals like seals, whales, and caribou for food and clothing.
The Europeans would trade animal pelts for things such as tools and weapons with this Native American people.
As they headed south, they encountered the Kwakiutl. These were a people that lived in the Pacific Northwest region of North America.
They lived near the ocean in rainy forests.
They would build wooden houses and make totem poles to tell family stories.
To survive, they caught fish and salmon from the sea and rivers, and gathered plants from the forest.
These were a peaceful people, that the Europeans would trade furs with.

Even further south, in the Southwestern region of North America, they encountered an artistic group of Native Americans known as the Pueblo.
The Pueblo lived in hot, dry deserts in the Southwest.
They would build adobe houses from clay and straw.
They would also farm corn, beans, and squash using irrigation (bringing water to crops), because their lands were so dry.
Europeans would trade weapons and tools for items such as their detailed pottery.
Once the Europeans became familiar with the routes to North America, they began settling in the coastal regions.
Colonies began popping up all over the East Coast of North America, and with that - trade networks were created.
As the demand for goods from the colonies grew, the demand for labor grew...
