“Hello class I have an exciting announcement to share.” Ms Franny said pleasantly.

“This year you can choose to be a part of the annual Third Grade Spelling Bee.”

As soon as Jack,the class bully, heard the news he smirked at the rest of the class and called out “Clearly I’m the best at spelling here. I’m definitely gonna beat you all!”

In the back of the class sat Sally the complete opposite of Jack.Her face looked glum. Sally wasn’t the best at spelling. 

But before Jack could continue speaking arrogantly Ms Franny gave the class flyers for the spelling bee. “Just to clarify you don’t have to join the spelling bee only do it if you’re confident enough.”said Ms Franny.

In the car ride home Sally sat completely motionless, her mum  started to get concerned.So that night during dinner her mum asked “What’s wrong Sally? You’ve been unusually quiet today.” Sally just shrugged, but her mother  insisted she tell her.

Eventually Sally couldn’t hide it anymore, so she told her mum all about it. “That’s exciting news. Why didn’t you tell me about it? Are you gonna sign up?” asked mum curiously. I don’t think so, I’m terrible at spelling. I’m definitely not gonna win.” said Sally doubtfully. “It’s not about winning, it’s about having fun and spelling to the best of your ability.” said mum reassuringly.

The next day of school Ms Franny asked anyone who wanted to be in the spelling bee to put up their hand. Sally thought for a bit and nervously put up her hand with the rest of the people who were joining. During lunchtime kids already started practising, especially Jack. Sally decided to practise too.

In the car, Sally was so excited to tell her mum about how she signed up for the spelling bee. “ Guess what mum, I signed up for the spelling bee! Can you help me practise?”  “ Of course in fact I’ll get you flash cards.”
