My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that every student has the potential to learn and thrive when provided with a supportive, engaging, and inclusive environment. I value fostering curiosity, critical thinking, and a growth mindset, aiming to cultivate learners who are not only knowledgeable but also motivated to explore and understand the world around them. I believe that recognizing each student’s unique needs, interests, and cultural backgrounds, and adapting instructional strategies accordingly to ensure meaningful learning experiences it’s an effective teaching. At the core of the conviction that learning should be student-cantered and active is my educational values. I strive to create a classroom environment where students feel safe to ask questions, take risks, and express their ideas. I am committed to using diverse teaching approaches such as hands-on activities, collaborative projects, and inquiry based learning to engage students and make learning relevant to their lives. The importance of fostering digital literacy, preparing students to navigate and critically evaluate information in an increasingly interconnected world is what I believe in.
The Learning Quest Board is a gamified classroom management tool inspired by game-based learning (GBL) and positive behaviour support. It transforms classroom routines into a collaborative adventure, where learners earn “quest points” for constructive behaviours, teamwork, and task engagement. The board is visual, interactive, and culturally inclusive—ideal for multilingual, diverse South African classrooms.
Theoretical Underpinnings
Theory Application in the Tool
Positive Behaviour Interventions and Supports (PBIS) Reinforces desired behaviours through consistent, respectful recognition.
Constructivism (Vygotsky) Encourages peer collaboration and scaffolding through team quests.
Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan) Fosters autonomy, competence, and relatedness via learner-led goals and rewards.
Afrocentric Pedagogy Incorporates communal values, storytelling, and symbolic representation.

Velcro or magnets to attach cards
A progress tracker (e.g., stars, tokens, or beads)
Optional: a digital version using Google Slides or Padlet for hybrid classrooms
Setup:

Blog Post 1: Service-Learning – Teaching Beyond the Classroom
Stepping into the realm of service-learning was a transformative experience that challenged my assumptions about teaching and deepened my understanding of education as a tool for social change. Unlike traditional classroom settings, service-learning placed me in a community context where learning was reciprocal where I wasn’t just teaching, but also learning from the lived experiences of others.
My placement involved working with a local NGO that supports under-resourced schools in Johannesburg. The learners I engaged with came from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and many-faced systemic barriers such as poverty, limited access to technology, and overcrowded classrooms. Initially, I felt overwhelmed. How could I make a meaningful impact in such a short time?
The answer came through listening. I began each session by asking learners what they wanted to learn, what they struggled with, and what excited them. This simple act of co-creating the learning experience shifted the dynamic.
