When reading this book, I want each student to visualize how art can challenge societal normalcies and inspire change. I also want them to think about what color represents emotionally, politically, and personally. Ask yourselves "what happens when creativity is controlled or erased?"

In the city of Greyville, everything was the same shade of grey. The buildings, the sky, even the people’s clothes looked drained of life. Once, long ago, color had existed, but now it was banned.

COLOR

Color was seen as dangerous, unpredictable, and rebellious. The government declared it to be “a distraction from order.” Artists who once painted the walls and streets of Grayville were silenced, and their work erased.
But not everyone forgot. Deep beneath the city, in the tunnels of the old subway, young artists met in secret. They called themselves The Values.
Among them was Kai, a seventeen year old graffiti artist known for painting with light. He had never seen real color, but he dreamed about it. He had dreams filled with blazing sunsets and glowing blues.
One night, Kai’s best friend Jexa showed him
something impossible. A single red petal,
pressed inside an old sketchbook. It pulsed
faintly like it still had life.
“Where did you find it?” Kai asked.
“In the old Art Museum,” Jexa
whispered. “Underneath
the dust.”
The Values made a plan to bring color back to the city. They planned to project colorful light art onto Grayville's tallest building, Hue Tower, on the anniversary of
the Color Ban. It would be a silent
rebellion in the
name of art.

For weeks, Kai and Jexa worked in secret, mixing
light frequencies to imitate true pigment. Every image
they created felt like a heartbeat in a dead city.
But word started to spread. Someone had betrayed them. The Grey Guards, agents of the Order of Color, began raiding the tunnels. Members of The Values were arrested one by one.
When Jexa didn’t show up one night, Kai knew she’d been caught. Still, he refused to quit. “If color dies with fear, then I’ll paint with courage,” he said, gripping his colored light projector like a weapon.
On the night of the anniversary, the city gathered in silence as usual. Kai climbed Hue Tower alone, the wind slicing through his jacket. He looked out over an endless gray ocean.
He pressed the button on his colored light projector. At first, nothing happened. Then suddenly, a beam of radiant blue burst across the skyline, followed by magenta, violet, and green. The city let out a collective gasp.
Every wall and window became a canvas. Faces lit up in color for the first time in generations. The air came alive like it had been holding its breath for a hundred years.
