One night, Sophie was sent home with Grammar homework.

Hmmmm, I'd better do this homework before I go to bed tonight...

Sophie tried and tried to understand her homework, but she fell asleep before she finished!

ZZZZzzzzzzzz

Suddenly, Sophie began to dream about her homework!

Sophie found herself in a forest, alone.
Huh? Where am I? A forest...

Suddenly, a Cat appeared and began to talk to her!

Who are you?
My name is Oxford the Cat. You may want to keep your voice down; the show is about to start!

Suddenly, a gumdrop began to dance around the clearing! Sophie looked toward Oxford, confused.
What is that thing?
That is Noun. A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea. For example, "Sophie" is a noun because it names a person!

Cool! So if I said, "The apple tree is nice." Which word is the noun?
In that sentence, the noun would be "Tree" and the noun phrase would be "apple tree".

Suddenly, another gumdrop joined Noun!
Who is that?
That's Verb! A verb identifies an action or a state of being. For example, "Dancing" is a verb because it describes an action.

Okay! So if I said, "I love eating sweets!" which word is the verb?
In that sentence, the verb would be "love" because it is what you, the subject, is doing.

After Verb finished a beautiful solo, another gumdrop joined.
Wow, that was great! Now, who is that?
That is Interjection. It shows or expresses emotions. For example, "oops", "eek", and "ouch"

Wow! So if I said, "Hooray, the knight won!" which one is the interjection?
Well, in that sentence, "Hooray" is the interjection as it shows your excitement over the knight's victory.
Just when Sophie thought the dance couldn't get any better, another gumdrop joined the routine!

Another one?!
Yes, that's Conjunction. Its job is to join words, phrases, or clauses. For example, in the sentence, "Shall we run for the hills, or face our enemies?", "Or" is the conjunction because it joins the two phrases.

Whoa.. So if I said "I am going to do the dishes and the laundry," the conjunction would be "and"?
Correct, Sophie!! "And" joins the two phrases together and acts as the conjunction in this sentence.

After Conjunction finished the routine with the other gumdrops, they left, and Sophie and Oxford watched as a new sweet entered the glade.

Who is this bouncing Jellybean?
This is Adverb. Its job is to modify a verb and state how, when, where, and to what extent. An example would be "happily" or "intriguingly".

Oh! So if I said "The bean bounces joyfully," the adverb would be "joyfully"?
Right again, Sophie! "Joyfully" describes the verb "bounces" and tells us how the bean bounced.
