From Social Media to Activism
During the recent conflict in Gaza 2024, "Instagram became more than a social media platform for me, it transformed into a tool for awareness, activism, and humanitarian action" (2). Before this, I mostly used Instagram to follow friends and watch entertainment content. However, as images and videos of the conflict spread online, I realized how powerful social media could be in mobilizing global support.

one day, I came across a post explaining how certain companies were supporting the ongoing violence and how people around the world were organizing boycotts through hashtags such as #BoycottProducts, #FreePalestine, and #StandWithGaza. I started researching more and found pages that listed which brands to avoid and which local alternatives to support. I decided to join the movement, shared information on my own account, and was surprised when many of my friends began doing the same. "These hashtags helped organize campaigns to raise awareness about the conflict and the suffering of civilians. Through Instagram, I could see firsthand how people from around the world were sharing information, spreading awareness, and encouraging others to take action."(3)

As the situation worsened, another crisis emerged — severe hunger and lack of basic supplies among civilians. Through Instagram, I saw heartbreaking images and videos of families struggling to find food and water. Many humanitarian pages began promoting donation campaigns to send aid. I participated by donating and sharing verified links with others. It made me realize that even small online actions can create real-life impact. "The impact was immediate. I learned about shortages of food and essential supplies among civilians in Gaza, a situation that deeply moved me." (2). Instagram posts highlighted humanitarian crises and encouraged donations to reliable aid organizations. "Inspired by this, I began contributing and sharing donation links with friends and family. Even small contributions, when multiplied across many users, made a tangible difference in helping families survive. This experience showed me that technology could turn individual awareness into collective action." (2)

This personal experience relates to broader lessons about the role of technology in social movements and activism. "Social media allows rapid communication and global engagement, much like blogs and online campaigns have influenced business and politics in the past" (4). "Just as Howard Dean’s blog reshaped political campaigns in 2004 by mobilizing grassroots support, Instagram hashtags enabled collective digital activism that supported humanitarian efforts in Gaza."
