It was August and Emmie was very excited because her birthday was
coming up.“Oh Ralph, do you know who’s birthday is coming up?”
asked Emmie excitedly.

“Yes” sighed Ralph, since this was the 10th time his little sister had
asked him that day.

Ralph knew he wanted to buy the Darcy doll for his little sisters’ birthday. He knew Emmie
really liked that doll when they saw it at Mc’Bees Toy Store last week. Ralph had no money
and knew the doll cost 5 dollars.

“Oh dear” Ralph said to himself. “How will I ever raise the money to
buy Emmie’s gift?” Ralph was very sad and thought and thought of
ways he could earn the money. “I know, I know!” yelled Ralph
out loud. “I can have a garage sale and sell my clothes that don’t fit
me.” ,

Ralph reached into his wooden trunk that had all his old
clothes from the year before. He pulled out 2 shirts,
1 pair of pants, 1 hat and 1 pair of boots. He decided he
wanted to sell each shirt for $1, the pair of pants for $3,
the hat for 60 cents and the pair of shoes for 50 cents.

Saturday came around and Ralph decided this would be the perfect
day for his garage sale. He took all his clothes and placed price
tags on them. Before he knew it people started coming by.

Mr. Appleberry came and wanted to buy a shirt for his son. “That will be
1 dollar,” said Ralph. Mr. Appleberry gave Ralph 20 nickels. Ralph knew
each nickel was worth 5 cents. He counted each nickel carefully. Ralph
knows that 10 nickels equals 50 cents. So he counted two groups of
ten. “Hooray! 20 nickels equals 1 dollar,” thought Ralph. “Thank you,
Mr. Appleberry.”
