"The Journey of the Slow Snail"
exsploring the flora and fauna of Europe
A story written and illustrated by children, connecting the beauties of European nature through children's imagination and creativity

“And the Iris, our Croatian national flower!” added another.
Snail Fast raised his feelers and sighed.
“Oh, how I wish I could see those wonderful plants!”
His friends laughed, and the snail without a shell said:
“What are you waiting for, Fasty? Go on a journey!”
And so, the little snail set off — slowly but determinedly.
He passed through meadows, forests, and streams until he finally reached Velebit. Everything there was peaceful and green.
The air smelled of mountains and flowers, and Fasty breathed slowly, admiring every blade of grass.
Suddenly, he saw a large, beautiful purple flower.
“Good day!” greeted the snail.
“Good day, little traveler,” smiled the Iris, her petals gently trembling in the wind.
“I came all the way from the city of Zagreb to meet you. Everyone says you’re a special flower.”
The Iris smiled kindly.
“Perhaps because everyone who sees me remembers wisdom, faith, and courage — the three gifts hidden within my petals.”
Snail Brzi stopped and thought for a moment.
“Wisdom to learn, faith to believe in myself, and courage not to fear the journey — or what I may find along the way, right?”
“Exactly,” said the Iris. “And remember, it doesn’t matter how slowly you go, as long as you move with joy.”
Snail Fasty smiled, thanked her, and slowly continued his way — toward Italy.
Who knows what adventures await him there?

The little Snail, had traveled far, crossing the fresh Alps, and now felt a new warmth on her shell. “What fragrant air!” she thought, savoring a mix of sea salt and... something deliciously sweet. Fast had reached Italy, a boot-shaped country bathed by a crystal-clear sea. Her arrival was in a city that seemed born from a painting: Naples.
It was a whirlwind of colors, sounds, and vitality! Fast carefully climbed an ancient wall, adorned with red geraniums. From there, she could see the glittering Gulf and, in the distance, a silent and imposing giant: Mount Vesuvius.
As she moved slowly along a narrow alley, she heard a wonderful melody. It was a passionate song, full of sunshine and melancholy. Suddenly, a shadow landed near her.

It was a lively Gecko named Gennaro, with large, curious eyes.
“Welcome to the heart of warmth, little traveler!” Gennaro hissed, swaying his head. “Are you tired? You must try the Pizza! It's a marvel that makes everyone happy, even the slowest of snails.” She smiled, instantly feeling at home amidst the cheer and generosity of the place. Gennaro promised to guide her through the city’s mysteries, from the seaside castle to the intoxicating scent of basil.
Although Fast was slow, Gennaro always waited for her, telling her stories of ancient kings and legends of mermaids. Her biggest obstacle was a busy stretch of road, full of fast shoes and bicycles. It was too dangerous for a little snail!
“Don’t worry!” exclaimed Gennaro. He knew that unity is strength. He loudly called his friend, a Blackbird with a
yellow beak named Peppino, who was whistling on a balcony.

“Peppino, my friend! We have
a traveler who needs to cross, but it's
too dangerous on the ground!”
Peppino swooped down, landing softly next to snail. With infinite caution, Peppino took her onto his back and,
vrrrr, flew over the confusion,
depositing her safely in
a hidden garden, full of ripe tomatoes
and fragrant basil plants.
It was a true secret garden, a small
oasis of biodiversity in the heart of
the city.

The little snail thanked her two new friends, Gennaro the Gecko and Peppino the Blackbird, for their solidarity and help. Fast had learned another great lesson from her journey: no matter how small you are or how far you have to go; with kindness and the help of friends, every obstacle can be overcome. Before saying goodbye, Gennaro gave her a small blue pebble found on the beach: “Take it with you! It will remind you of the sky and the sea of Naples.” And so, with a treasure and a full heart, prepared for her next adventure.

The little snail, as it was exploring the meadows of Italy and making friends, suddenly found itself in the arms of a small child. 'Dad, dad, look what I found!' exclaimed little Kostas. 'Yes, it's a snail, said the father. 'It's very beautiful, Dad. Can I keep it and take it with us to Greece?' "Yes, said the father, and our little snail that same day found itself travelling by plane inside a small cardboard box. When Kostas arrived at his home in Ioannina, he released the little snail in his garden. The little snail felt full of curiosity to explore its new location. Suddenly, it stumbled upon a massive animal and was startled. 'Hey, snail, watch out, I'll step on you!' said the tortoise. 'What's your name?' asked the snail. 'Oh, you don't know me,' replied the tortoise. 'I'm Lona the tortoise.' 'I'm new to these parts.

Can you tell me what kind of flower this is that is so beautiful?' the snail asked the tortoise. 'They are chrysanthemums. They welcome us to the Autumn season. 'I have to go,' the tortoise told him, and immediately the snail ran close to a small, spiky animal.
Hello, I am the little snail and I am travelling to meet new friends and new beautiful flowers.' 'Hello, then, little snail. I am Joe the hedgehog and I live in Kostas' yard.' The little snail, after greeting Joe, continued its exploration. It stopped in front of some tender lettuces and started eating. All this exploring had really whetted its appetite."
