Taxes led to a clash between Texans and Mexico. It took place at the port of Anahuac, where a tax collector and a unit of Mexican soldiers were assigned to control the commerce coming in and out of Mexico. The garrison was commaned by Colonel John Juan Davis Bradburn. Soon after arriving, Bradburn fought with the colonists who resided at Anahuac.

You refused to hand over enslaved people who tried to escape to freedom, Your troops also stole supplies! But worst of all, you, Bradburn, tried to enforce the duty on goods imported by ship into Texas.
Whatever!
On Bradburn's orders, a tax collector at Anahuac tried to get duties on goods as far away as the Brazos River. Meanwhile, a small number of Mexican troops were based at the mouth of the Brazos River, but there was no tax collector. To process the necessary papers to pay these taxes, ship captains on the Brazos were expected to dock and travel long distances overland to Anahuac. This angered them, and they took their ships upriver without stopping at the mouth of the Brazos to pay. This resulted in an exchange of gunfire between the Texans and Mexican troops.

Shoot!
We don't want to travel so much, or pay taxes!
In May of 1832, Bradburn arrested two lawyers, William B. Travis and Patrick C. Jack, and put them in prison. He thought they had been spreading false rumors that an armed force from Louisiana was coming to Anahuac. Bradburn said they had meddled with his attempts to enforce the laws. Two seperate groups of angry settlers, with about 200 people, went to Anahuac. Frank W. Johnson and William H. Jack, Patrick's brother, led one group from San Felipe. John Austin, related to Stephen F. Austin, led the other from Brazoria. A small fight occured between Texans and Mexican troops. The Texans captured some of Bradburn's soldiers in exchange for the two lawyers. Bradburn agreed to the switch if they retreated. Some relased the soldiers but others refused. So, Bradburn kept Travis and Jack and called in other forces.

Give us our soldiers back
No, give us Travis and Jack.
