THE CAPTAIN EVERYONE LOVED
Othello was the captain of the Venice-Cyprus Academy Varsity football team. In addition to his strength and speed, he was helpful, friendly, and motivating. He would always say "Try again!" when someone missed a catch. With him in charge of the team, everyone respected him and felt secure.
A BIG DECISION
The team had to make an important. Othello needed to pick a co-captain to help him lead. This person would help run practices, talk to the coach, and keep the team motivated. While many players hoped to be selected, Iago's hopes were the highest. Iago believed he deserved that position just because he was Othello's best friend. He worked hard for the position he had dreamed of the day Othello called his name.
A DIFFERENT CHOICE
However, Othello decided on Cassio. Cassio was friendly, hard working, and always assisted younger players in picking up new skills. Othello believed Cassio would be the team's ideal co-captain. Everyone applauded, with the exception of Iago. Iago pretended to be happy but on the side he was angry, heartbroken, and jealous.
A SECRET CRUSH
The next day, Iago noticed something a little different. When Cassio spoke to Othello's girlfriend, he often blushed as Iago assumed. Cassio thought she was kind and pretty, but he didn't necessarily want to be with her. But Iago noticed everything about Cassio, and a thought started to form in his head. If he couldn't be co-captain, maybe he could jeopardize the person that was chosen to be co-captain.
IAGO'S SNEAKY PLAN
Iago made the decision to trick Othello. " I saw Cassio laughing with Desdemona today," he began to murmur, or "Cassio seems really close to her." He only said enough to stir up Othello's curiosity, not complete lies. Othello trusted Iago because he was his best friend so those sayings started sink deep into his brain.
OTHELLO STARTS TO WORRY
Othello tried to ignore the whispers, but they were disturbing him. He began to notice things that he wouldn't normally notice. If Desdemona smiled at Cassio Othello felt nervous. If Cassio asked for help with homework and Desdemona said yes, Othello would overthink. Although he remained silent, the worries grew bigger and bigger.
DESDEMONA JUST WANTS TO HELP
Desdemona was unaware that Othello was beginning to have concerns. She enjoyed being of assistance to others. She would help someone with their assignments if they needed it. So when Cassio asked her for help studying for a big test, she agreed without thinking twice. She was unaware that Iago was watching and intending to twist everything around.
