All about Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman was born in March 1821. She was very brave and escaped from slavery, but she also helped other black people escape from slavery. She was a big help in the underground railroad. Her real name was "Minty" until she got her name Harriet Tubman. The underground railroad was a way for black people to escape from slavery. It had hotels, places for food, and shelter.
Childhood
When she was born, Harriet Tubman grew up with her mom and dad. Her parents were named Harriet (her mom) and her dad was named Ben. They had many kids who were also enslaved. Harriet Tubman was one of them, but her real name was "Minty" instead of Harriet. When she learned to walk, she liked to play with her brothers and sisters in the yard. They went fishing down by the lake and were happy. They were not slaves yet.
Growing up
When she was little, she grew up in a tiny cabin. The floors were made of dirt, and the beds were made of small thin blankets. There weren't any windows in the cabin. Around the year 1827, when Minty turned six, her life changed. Mr. Brodas took her away from her family to work for him. She was now a slave. Now she had to work for white people, and she also had to live there. She did not want to go. The day she had to leave, a wagon came to pick her up.
Helping others
When she was thirteen or fourteen, she helped a runaway slave. He ran outside and someone was chasing him. Minty blocked the door so they could not catch him. The person picked up a heavy two-pound weight and threw it and missed his target. Instead, he hit Minty on her forehead, and she fell in pain. She was bleeding and no one thought she would live. The housekeeper took care of her. Minty was unconscious, but yet she lived. From then on, everyone called her by her mother's name. Her name changed from Minty to Harriet Tubman.
