Lionfish are colorful fish with long fins and venomous spines and they come from warm Indo Pacific waters but have spread into the Atlantic and Caribbean where they do not belong. The two main kinds are the red lionfish and the devil lionfish and both use their wide fins to trap small fish. Because lionfish have almost no predators and grow quickly in population, they cano eat many native fish and this can harm coral reefs

Lionfish Ecosystem 

A lionfish ecosystem is the warm ocean environment where lionfish live. They are usually found in the Indo Pacific in places with coral reefs rocky areas and plenty of hiding spots. In this ecosystem lionfish hunt small fish and shrimp and they use their venomous spines to protect themselves. Healthy reefs and warm clear water help lionfish survive and grow.

Symbiosis 

Interaction between two different organisms living in close physical association, typically to the advantage of both, one unaffected, host harmed but parasite benefits, or predator and prey. The lionfish represents predation in relationships with marine life, due to it's appetite on 70+ species of native marine life in Florida while having no predators to the space it's invading.

Invasive threats 

The Lion Fish rapidly consumes native fish like juvenile groupers, snappers and parrot fish. Lionfish out competes natives for food, lacking predators and reproducing extremely fast at 2 million eggs per year.

Call to action

Others can help by removing/hunting the lionfish. This action reduces the amount of competition amongst other fish for food. Removing the species helps endangered marine populations grow again. This action also reduces the amount of algae and coral deaths.
