Chapter 1
"I Hate Reading!"
Kylie stared in defeat as the words on the page tormented her. She had been trying as hard as she could, but she still could not understand them.
Her mother was glaring at her. "Well?! Read this page. You've been staring at it for a long time."
"I can't understand it," Kylie sobbed.
Her mother became so frustrated that Kylie could not read that she ripped all of her books apart. Kylie was devastated.
She ran to her room and slammed the door. "I hate reading!" she snapped as she flopped on the bed, crying until her eyes were as red as cherries. She hated being the only one in her family that could not read.
Kylie always struggled to read. Everyone else in her family learned to read early. She was the only one who was not able to do so. "Why can't I read like everybody else? What is wrong with me? Am I ever going to learn how to read?"
Since she could not read, Kylie disliked going to school and, especially, Reading Class. She would pretend to be sick so she wouldn't have to go to school.
Kylie's mom would always make her go anyway.
"Maybe you'll learn how to read in school. I can't help you anymore," her mom would always say.
Kylie was very unhappy. She would just sit in class and stare at the pages of words.
Her teacher would always scold her because she would do nothing in class but draw. She would open her book and just stare, because she did not know how to read.
She would just draw pictures in her sketchbook instead.
I'm never going to learn to read, thought Kylie.

Chapter 2
Trapped!
Kylie loved to draw. She would draw pictures of the things she liked the most.
One day, as Kylie was drawing in her art book, something strange began to occur. The pictures on the page began to come alive! She stared hard at what was happening.
"Am I dreaming? Did I stay up too late last night? What is going on?" she wondered as she rubbed her eyes.
As she was pondering it, she was suddenly swirled into the book like a branch in the middle of a tornado.
WHOOSH!
"What's happening?!" Kylie squealed.
Before she could figure out what was going on, WHAM!
The cover of the book slammed and she was stuck in the pages. She looked around in horror.
"What's happening?" She gasped, frantically searching for a way to open the book.
As she scurried around, she bumped into a peculiar machine with letters scattered all around the ground. There were slots in the front of it and buttons with bright colors. She inched closer to investigate. "What's this?" she wondered.
Just as she was about to reach out and touch this strange machine, a mysterious voice spoke out and said, "YOU CAN DO THIS, YOU CAN READ."
Kylie jumped when she heard the voice speaking. "Who's there? Come out and show yourself."

What is this?
CHAPTER 3:
The Picture Popper
"I am your Reading Coach. My name is Jake. I'm going to guide you on your journey."
"My journey? What journey?" Kylie asked, not understanding.
"Your journey to learning to read and succeed."
"I don't like reading."
"You will after you complete your journey," Jake reassured her.
Jake led Kylie to the machine. As they walked towards it, it began to hum, buzz, and vibrate.
BZZZ! WHIR! CLANK!
Kylie's eyes widened as she saw one of her pictures pop up on the screen in front of her.
"Hey! That's my picture! How did it get in there?" she asked Jake.
"All you have to do is find the letters, words, or sentences that go with each picture," Jake explained.
"But, Jake, I can't read that well," Kylie complained.
"You know your letter sounds, so you can do this. I'm here to help you."
"Okay. I'll try."
"Great! Now, just push the blue button under the picture, and the Picture Popper will say the name of the picture. You will find the letters that make up that word and insert them into the machine. You will insert the letters into the letter pocket to create the words."
"If you get the letters correct, your picture will pop out of the slot. If you do not get the letters correct, the letter will slide into the discarded letter pocket. You will find the correct letter and put it into the letter pocket."
"Okay, I'm ready," Kylie said hopefully.
She pushed the blue button.
BZZZ! WHIR!
"TREE" the Picture Popper said in a robotic voice.
"Ok, Kylie. Now go find the letters that spell the word, TREE," Jake instructed.
Kylie said the word to herself as she searched for letters, "T-R-E." She found the letters T, R, and E. She input the letter T into the letter pocket.
DING! "That is correct," the Picture Popper replied.
On the screen, Kylie saw the letter 'T' pop up under the picture of the tree. She continued and inserted the letters 'R' and 'E'. The same thing.
DING! DING!
The picture did not pop out. "What happened?" Kylie inquired. "I put the letters in, but my picture did not come out."
"That means you are not finished with this word. Find the last letter, and your picture will be released," Jake taught her.
"Hmmm. T-R-E..." Kylie thought for a moment. "Oh, I know. It's the letter E!" She quickly found the letter E and put it into the machine.
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! Her picture of a tree slid out of the Picture Popper.
"Yay! I did it, Jake!" Kylie shouted excitedly.
"Yes, you did," Jake encouraged her. "Now I'm going to leave you to work for a while."
"If you need me, all you need to do is call my name, and I will come." Jake left her to work.
Kylie commenced putting letters in the Picture Popper for each picture she saw on the screen. Every time she got the words correct, she would get another picture. She placed all of the pictures inside of the notebook Jake gave her.
She was happy that she was learning how to spell words.

CHAPTER 4:
Graduation
Kylie mastered spelling the words that were associated with the pictures she drew. She had several pictures in her notebook.
All of a sudden, the pictures became more detailed. There was not just one picture. There was a scene that Kylie had drawn on each new picture. The Picture Popper started saying complete sentences.
The letters on the ground were all gone. Now she had to find words to complete the sentences.
