

Ibn Battuta was one of the greatest medieval timed travelers and the author of a book called Rihlah. His journeys were around 75,000 miles long. He traveled through most of the Muslim world. Let's learn about him.
Ibn Battuta was born on February 24, 1304 in Morocco. He was born into a family of judges and was taught the basics of the Islamic faith. But he wanted more so, so he decided to become an explorer so that he could expand his knowledge on the islamic faith.
When Ibn was only 21 years old, he went on his first journey to the holy city of Islam, called Mecca and stayed there from 1327 to 1330. His first reasons for traveling was to learn more about his religion. He went to Egypt where he met scholars and mystics and learned from them.


In Egypt he formed a love for travelling and exploring. He traveled for adventure. His trips were paid for by rulers of the countries he visited.

On his way back to Mecca he visited the places like southern Arabia, Oman, Hormuz, and Persia. But after his journey he heard about the sultan of Delhi's generosity. So he decided to travel to India to meet him. On his way he ran into mountain ranges and a river called the Indus river.

He traveled to Iran, Iraq, and Yaman. He met many rulers including Mongolian Khans. He traveled as far as tanzania in Africa. Then he decided to head back to Mecca.

Once Ibn arrived at Delhi, the sultan was friendly and welcoming. While he was there, he was appointed to the grand qadi of Delhi and had the position for many years. But, Ibn Battuta found out that Delhi had a lot of danger and left. Then the Sultan asked him to go to China with presents for them.

Before he set off on his journey he and his friends got attacked and robbed. He was later involved in a shipwreck. Since he lost the presents for the Chinese he decided to run away to the Maldives.
