Patches the Star
Jack was a little boy who lived in a big house with his mom, dad and older sister
Hannah. Jack felt alone every day. Mom and dad would leave for work Monday, Tuesday,
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Hannah would go to school every day on a big yellow
bus with her friends.
Jack would watch his family pass by him in the hallway ignoring him. They would also
pay little attention to him at the breakfast table.

When Jack would try to share his stories nobody would listen to him. They
would say good bye to him when he was dropped off at the daycare. Jack
would play alone all day long. It was very lonely for him
There were many other children for Jack to play with but he chose to sit
all by himself playing with the cars and trucks. The daycare worker tried very
hard to help Jack make friends but it never worked out. She felt very
concerned for him.
Jack had beautiful green eyes, curly blonde hair and wore such cool clothes
that made him look so grown up. He would not smile as often as a child of his
age should.

Jack made a special effort to talk to one special girl who asked him to be her
friend. He felt in his heart that a friend can be so special. The little girl’s name was
Molly. Jack loved her name because it was very easy to say. It also made her smile
when he would say ‘Hi’ to her.
When he did smile his eyes would light up and his face would beam like the sun in the
sky. Jack would especially smile when the other children showed acts of kindness like
sharing a toy, a book or offering him special treats from their back packs every
morning when she came to daycare.

Molly was a bubbly little girl. She could talk really fast. Jack found that very amusing.
Her words had a funny sound when she spoke. He loved each and every word she said to
him. Molly was born in Canada but her mom and dad were from a faraway land called
Ireland.
Jack would try and repeat her cool words under his blanket when he went to bed at
night. No matter how many times he tried repeating the words over and over they never
sounded as lovely as they did when Molly spoke them. He felt that if he continued to say
them over and over one day he could speak the words as perfectly as Molly did.

Jack’s mom and dad did not know of his favorite words. They never seemed to ask of
his day or even show interest in his only friend at daycare. It did not matter anyhow to
him because he felt they would probably tease him calling Molly his girlfriend.
Jack was her friend only. That was how he wanted his mom and dad to think too.
Hanna was too busy with her older friends and so she never seemed to give him even a
small amount of sister/brother attention. He wanted to share with her questions and
stories about him and Molly but he had to keep them all to himself.

During the day the children at the daycare would have a scheduled quiet time. That
is when the children would have the opportunity to read, talk on the chat mat or take a
nap on the cots. Jack and Molly always chose the chat mat every time. Chat time allowed
Jack to share secrets.
Molly would listen close to every word he spoke. She had a kind and understanding
heart. This was a very special gift especially for such a young child. One day Jack
shared a secret with Molly. She listened with open ears but what Jack said made her
very sad.

‘Molly, I am so sad. You always seem to laugh. How come you never get sad?’ Jack
spoke in a whispering voice as not to let the daycare worker hear him.
‘Why are you sad Jack? Did you hurt yourself? Molly asked with love and attention.
‘No my heart is hurting but I did not fall on it. No one punched me in my heart. It just
hurts a lot’.
Molly was quiet. Her little mind was busy trying to think of a way to make Jack feel
better. She was trying to understand just how he felt.

She could not think of anything that had made her heart hurt as bad as his
heart was feeling.
‘Jack, what does your heart feel like if it is hurting?
Her question was not a difficult one. Jack tried to explain to her the best way
he could.
“Molly, mommy and daddy gave me a kitten for my birthday last year. I called
him ‘Patches’. He was my friend. He licked my face and it tickled’.
