"This cannot be happening," I thought. My
heart sank like an anchor. I raced over to the once
full plate of decadent, homemade treats. "Oh, no!"
I cried. The charity bake sale was in less than
three hours, and my contribution would be one
measly cupcake. A backup plan would have to be
devised, but first, I wanted to investigate where
the remaining 23 cupcakes had gone.

I figured I would start with my Mom because she always has all of
the answers. "Have you seen my cupcakes for the bake sale?"
"I had no idea they were being used for that," Mom frowned, "I feel
terrible, but they looked so good, I wanted to share 1/4 of them with
the members of my book club."
I had to do some converting since 24 is a multiple of 4, and
therefore I can make equivalent fractions to figure out how many
cupcakes Mom took with her.
1/4 = 6/24
That means Mom brought 6 cupcakes to her book club meeting, and
there are still 17 cupcakes left to find.

Outside my brother, Henry, was playing basketball. "Henry," I called, "Where
are my cupcakes?"
He turned with a grin like the Cheshire cat and said, "In my stomach, and just so
you know, they were out of this world! Well, that is until I knew you made them!
Cooties! Gross!"
I scowled at my brother, waiting for him to explain further. "I figured Mom
made them just for me because I'm so awesome, and therefore I took 1/6 of the
cupcakes for lunch."
As his mouth was moving a mile a minute, I proceeded to do the math in my head.
1/6 = 4/24
Between Mom and Henry, ten cupcakes were located. Now, I needed to track
down 13 more. This should be a piece of cake... if only I had some of that to bring to
the bake sale!

I heard my Dad's car roar to life in the driveway, and I raced outside to greet
him. Before he could say anything, I blurted, "Do you know anything about my
missing cupcakes?"
"Oh, no!" Dad exclaimed, "Those were yours? I was in charge of desserts for
our work meeting, and I thought if some went missing, it would not be a big deal. I
am so sorry!"
"So you took the remaining thirteen?" I asked, ready to retire my role as
Sherlock Holmes.
"No, I only needed of 4/8 of them," Dad replied.
That means...I calculated the equivalent fraction in my head.
4/8 = 12/24
Between Mom, Dad, and Henry, 22 cupcakes have been found, but one was still
missing. There are only four of us in my family, and I had already interrogated
everyone. Now this search had turned into quite the mystery! If Nancy Drew
were in my shoes, she would know what to do!
