May your curiosity always lead you into the wild, and may your knowledge always lead you back home. Here’s to the trails less traveled and the stories yet to be told.
Stay safe and stay wild."

The Descent into Green
The last thing I remember was the engine of my bush plane coughing before we clipped the top of a kapok tree . Now, I’m standing on the forest floor, and it’s like being in a giant, green cathedral. It’s dim down here because the canopy—a thick layer of leaves 100 feet above me—blocks out almost all the sunlight. The air is so heavy and humid (nearly 90%) that I feel like I’m breathing water. I’m in the heart of the tropical rainforest, and I need a plan.

By mid-afternoon, the sky turned a bruised purple. In this biome, it rains over 2,000 mm a year, and the daily storm was coming. I found a massive tree with buttress roots—huge, wall-like ridges that stick out from the trunk. I leaned long branches against the roots to make a frame and thatched it with waxy. Philodendron leaves. Their "drip tips" are shaped like little gutters to help the rain slide right off. I made sure to sleep on a raised platform of sticks to stay away from the damp ground and the millions of decomposers living in the leaf litter.
Racing the Daily Deluge (Shelter).

The Hunger Games (Food & Water)
My stomach was growling, but the rainforest is full of "look-but-don't-touch" plants. I avoided anything with milky white sap, as that usually means poison. Luckily, I spotted a wild banana tree and some brazil nuts that had fallen. For water, the river looked too muddy to drink. I found a thick, woody liana vine hanging from a branch. I cut a notch in it, and clear, cool rainwater poured out. It tasted like survival.

A Golden Shadow (Animal Encounter)
I heard the snap of a twig. Emerging from behind a giant fern was a jaguar, its coat dappled like the sunlight hitting the forest floor. My instinct was to scream and bolt, but I knew that would trigger its "predator-prey" reflex. I stood my ground, raised my arms to look twice my size, and shouted, "NOT TODAY!" The big cat blinked, unimpressed but curious. It realized I wasn't an easy meal and melted back into the shadows of the understory.

The Trek Out
On the final morning, I used the sun to find North and started walking. I hacked through dense ferns and avoided the stinging hairs of the bullet ant. Finally, the trees thinned, and I saw a rescue boat on the river. I’ve learned that the rainforest isn't just a place of danger; it’s a perfectly balanced machine where every plant and animal has a job. I’m leaving with a few scratches, but a lifetime of respect for the "Lungs of the Earth."

Extra "Interesting Facts
The 10-Minute Rain: The canopy is so thick that it can take 10 minutes for a raindrop to travel from the top of the trees to the ground.
Biodiversity: Even though rainforests cover less than 6% of Earth's land, they house more than 50% of the world’s plant and animal species!
